The tour was 100% worth it, definitely a great experience. We were able to see the aurora and got hot cocoa. Our tour guide Evan was so informative and knowledgeable and passionate about his job, it definitely made the experience even more memorable. Definitely bring warm clothes and be ready to aurora chase!

The aurora borealis is one of the most amazing natural wonders this world has to offer. Join us on a quest to view and photograph the northern lights in and around the Anchorage area. We will use our luxury tour vehicle as a base camp as well as a state of the art portable winter shelter complete with heater, chairs, hot drinks and snacks. We use modern technology to forecast both the space and earth weather each night. The tour only operates on nights that have a reasonable expectation for the lights to be visible. While we cannot guarantee you will see the aurora, if we do operate the tour we have over a 90% success rate of seeing the northern lights. You only pay if we operate the tour. This tour is designed for anyone who has viewing the northern lights on their bucket list including both sightseers and serious photographers. Aurora photography instruction as well as Aurora portraits are provided. Tours generally depart at 9 pm and return at 3 am.

Evan was absolutely wonderful! Although the weather started off with strong winds and lots of clouds, his patience, dedication, and persistence made all the difference. He never gave up, and thanks to his determination, we were able to experience the breathtaking Northern Lights! He was kind, patient, and attentive throughout the experience. He also offered to take pictures of us, helping us capture memories that we will cherish forever. Seeing the auroras was truly magical, and Evan went above and beyond to make sure we had an unforgettable experience despite the challenging weather conditions. We are so grateful for his efforts and highly recommend him to anyone hoping to see the Northern Lights. Thank you, Evan, for making this such a special and memorable night!
Exceptional Experience!! Dennis our tour guide and photographer was great. Extremely knowledgeable, humorous, transparent, and overall a great guide. He really went above and beyond to ensure our experience seeing the lights were remarkable. For it to be early season of northern lights, it really was a great night and show to watch. We also saw a Shooting Star and one of the passengers caught it in their photo. Dennis was able to capture such a special moment of the shooting star for Vanessa in her photo. Words simply can’t explain the entire experience, you just have to witness for yourself truly. Special shoutout to Steven and Dennis for their great predictions and allowing us to have a phenomenal experience and core lifetime memory. Hands down best Alaska experience. The northern lights are light beautiful angels communicating in the sky😍
Chasing the Aurora is a mix of skill and luck (weather / sun etc). And Steven & his team were great! We were watching the geomagnetic activity level vs cloud coverage, and after deciding that the day before the booking was actually our best bet - they kindly switched our trip day to 1x day before and made it work 🙏 And we had a magical time! (while it was a bit cold, so do dress appropriately). They were skilled taking photos of us (included in package), and can't really fault them for anything 😅
Well worth the experience! My adventure seeing the lights was iffy after constant rain shed doubt on the evening but my guide went out of her way to drive us over the mountain range to lead us to a window in the cloud cover to show our group the spectacular northern lights.
Steve was super knowledgeable and he made this tour comfortable taking to places and also clicking pictures for us.
We had a great time seeing the lights! Dennis and his colleague were knowledgeable enthusiastic and engaging! They took great care of us throughout the night. The light show was amazing!
Come prepared to be patient and bring warm clothes, even in summer. Heated van to retreat to helps. Leaders are knowledgeable and solicitous. If It was a grand adventure and we did get to see Lady Aurora! Magical.
The experience is awesome. The view of the Northern Lights from a remote location (away from city lights) is a must to see. The multitude of stars is beautiful.
If you are to see the northern lights, go with Dana. She is like a dog with a bone. She just won’t quit. She explains the lights. She studies the lights. She photographs the lights. She loves the lights and she wants to share them with all of us. It is a wonderful experience and I highly recommend it. Just try to nap before!!
Our guide was very friendly. I forgot her name but she was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the aurora. We were able to see it come alive at the 1st spot and didn't have to chase it. It was spectacular.
We chased the lights but didnt catch them. Nonetheless, it was a great experience. My tour guide, Dana, was friendly and knowledgeable. I would book this again.
My husband and I loved our northern lights tour. It was eight people plus our guide, Aaron, and it seemed everyone had such a great time! We were able to see the lights towards the end and they were breathtaking! It took some time for the lights to be visible but we were all warm while in the van. I can't imagine how difficult it can be to be a tour guide for this experience as it is late at night and there is no 100% when or if you will see the lights but we had such a great time with Aaron as our guide, he was so passionate not just about the aurora but Alaska in general as many of us it was our first time visiting! We left with so much more knowledge and had a wonderful time.
Good communication, got the experience I was hoping for, guide was friendly and went above and beyond sharing his own pictures / videos.
It’s a fairly long drive but well worth it! Dana did a great job making sure we had a good time from seeing the lights, photos & hot cocoa!
Dennis was a wonderful guide full of knowledge and enthusiasm. He was very thoughtful and made sure we were comfortable. Although we didn’t get to see the northern lights this trip it was certainly a memorable tour.
1 million percent worth it! Dana was amazing and drove us to a beautiful location where we got to see Aurora dance in the sky. It was so great getting to share her passion for the lights with an evening under the stars and the perfect Aurora show! I can’t wait to see the photos she took!
It’s cold but beautiful, our tour guide is super nice and professional. We see the aurora several times. It’s worth the wait and money.
it was a great experience, our guide CHRIS did all his best and at last we saw the aurora ,,,wonderful
Lights were super weak And tour guide is not interested in trying out more places . They just went to 2 places and gave up. Don’t go by the 5 star ratings you see. They are giving a free aurora mug for anyone who rate 5 stars in front of them. Save your money!
Dennis was great, very informative and eager to make sure that we were all pleased! Can’t wait to see the pics!
Dennis was awesome, he was on a mission to get us good pics and share with us his knowledge! Very attentive and made me feel safe as a solo traveler.
We were lucky enough to get a clear night. Our guide Dana was AMAZING, she helped and provided us with everything we needed.
This company is very professional for Northern light, They not just looking only KP value (that date is 2) but they look all the data and then they decide to take the tour and other company is cancel the tour. Vary recommend this company
Honest company. Was rainy, they let us know poor chances of seeing the lights. Appreciated that they didn’t take our money!
A long drive but we'll worth it. Exceeded our expectations! The best experience we had in Alaska. Go on...Do it!
You will not always be fully see Aurora so don't get your hopes up. If the tour operator does not recommend the trip don't go. If thry recommend it is your call. In our case Steve thought we had as good as a chance as any of the following days to experience Aurora. Unfortunately we were not able to see Aurora with our plain eyes. Only through the iPhone camera. We had our pics taken with hands pointing at the sky and we were able do see the lights only in the photo Steve and Dana were very friendly informative, helpful, and accommodating While Steve and Dana went overboard trying to chase down elusive Northern Lights we were disappointed not to see the lights directly. Seeing via the camera was not as rewarding. We did feel the price of the tour was very much on the high side especially compared to what was being charged at Fairbanks. In the end it probably comes down to if we are fully able to experience Aurora or not. In our case the price we paid for the tour was not worth it.
This was incredible!! Dana, our guide, was amazing! She is super knowledgeable, entertaining, a great host, and managed to give us a spectacular vista of the northern lights! We spent over an hour taking photos of the aurora. She took photos of us with the aurora using her hi tech camera setup but also taught us how to properly photograph it on our iPhones.
Great tour leader, great communication. Travelled all night but the weather was not good to view the lights. Don’t think it’s worth spending over $500 AUD for the lights. I have had several Northern lights experienced around the world and don’t believe this tour, would have meet my expectations of viewing the Northern lights from what I gather. Faint Streak in the sky/slight colour in the photo doesn’t mean I have seen the Northern lights.
Great company to deal with. Not a fly by night (pun intended) outfit. You can trust their integrity and judgment. Had to call off the experience but still a great company to work with! 100% refund no problem.
Jacob was an excellent guide, so informative and accommodating. We learned about the aurora AND how to photograph it. We were all glad he was our guide!
Great tour. Chris was fantastic and very passionate about this tour and this field of work in general. Not an easy task to perform but he is a 5 star guy. Loved the aurora borealis and would probably do this tour again.
We got lucky. We saw the lights pretty early. Got a second spectacular show on the side of the road on the way back also. Dana our guide/photographer was exceptional. Her enthusiasm and knowledge made this a very enjoyable tour.
We had a great experience with Mike! Our trip got 2 groups of people, togethor 6 people in the van. Everyone in the trip is very nice. We had a great experience chatting. Mike picked us a bit early which is very clever, because that night got amazing aurora from 10pm to 12 am! We headed to the north cabins. There are a lot of great photo spots around the cabin. We got more than 30 great photos! All web quality photos are free and you can extra purchase high quality photos.
That you can not see the lights. The driver was very nice and knowledgeable however, she was an hour late picking us up leaving us waiting in the cold. The drive is a 2.5 hour drive, you stay for an hour then drive back. Not worth the money. We couldn't even take pictures. We paid 50.00 more than other tours and not sure for what.
Dana was an absolute gem. Her energy, excitement, and knowledge of the northern lights was phenomenal. Hands down the best birthday gift 🥳
This was the most amazing experience! Dana really knows her stuff and provided a great experience. This tour is with experts who know the area, the Aurora behavior and they are phenomenal photographers! It was cold (wear double socks and bring extra hot hands warmers for your gloves and socks!) but tolerable and worth it! The guides understand the science behind the auroras and, if you stick it through, after snacks and naps the light show will leave you speechless! Thank you Dana for an incredible experience!
Best tour ever! So much prep and assurance by Steve & Chris (the amazing guide who brought us) and the result was an amazing aurora show! The technology they used to ensure the best experience possible. Tip: give them the range of days you’ll be in Anchorage and they will find the best night to bring you out for the tour - because they are so good at reading the forecast, you are in good hands! We went on Mar 8, it was a spectacular burst of show! Thank You Greatland! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Tim is a very good guide and teacher, under his guidance I got great shots of the aurora and learned to spot them on my own! No worries if you don’t have heavy coats to stay in the outside all the time, it’s ok to stay in the van cause the brilliant guide will never let you miss the aurora! However, as many have said, the aurora is not as dramatic to the naked eye as it is to the camera, so it is more recommended for those who want to take pictures and share them!
Great tour! We chased the lights and were finally successful. Guide was perky and funny- just what was needed for an overnight tour. Dress warm in layers and bring a pillow!
Aaron, thank you so much for this impeccable experience! The northern lights were even more breathtaking than we imagined, and you made sure we were able to see them in their full glory. The whole tour—from your explanations of aurora science and forecasting, to your photography, to the snacks and hand warmers and luxury vehicle—made for such a wonderful experience. We couldn’t be more grateful!
Moving forward, I will only recommend Greatland Adventures to anyone wanting to see the Northern Lights in Alaska. They take such a refreshing approach to viewing the Northern Lights from the passionate attitudes of the drivers and the guides to the atmospheric chemistry mind of the owner. This is truly their bread and butter and they dedicate hours of their day to make sure that you have the best experience possible. We went in Anchorage and we had both Dana and Aaron as our guides (Dana for 2 nights and Aaron for 1). Honestly, their excitement made the standing outside in the cold more like a team effort. They were awesome and their photography skills were AMAZING for those creative shots. Initially, we booked for three nights in a row because we were so nervous that we weren't going to see it in Anchorage. We definitely searched and had to escape some cloud coverage, but we saw them every night. When we tell people that we saw the lights three nights in a row, they said we were lucky. We said it was all the tour company. This is the place that you want to book. Also, the owner Steve is tremendous and his knowledge in atmospheric chemistry gives this experience a whole new meaning. Just a beautiful blend of a majestic scientfic phenomenon. Just do yourself a favor and book with them. The whole experience is incredible and you won't regret it.
Dana was fantastic. Full of enthusiasm and was extremely helpful in explaining everything and helping set you up to take photos. Had a great experience.
It takes an expert guide to chase the northern lights. Thanks to Chris Moss, our tour guide, who worked very hard and drove us to many places so we could see the various shapes and colors of northern lights. The SUV was large, comfortable and warm. Chris took lots of pictures of us and of the northern lights. Great experience. I strongly recommend it.
No guarantee We didn’t see anything but darkness. It was a long time of nothing. Very disappointing.
Tim was our guide. Very sweet and friendly. Quite knowledgeable about Northern lights. We only saw a little aurora which was disappointing but no fault of Tim The experience was great
I have to say our experience was nothing short of amazing! Our tour guide Dana was just amazing. She was so informative, her passion and energy was infectious. She made sure she drove to an area where she knew we would have a great view. She had snacks and warm drinks. I so highly recommend this tour !!
This was the second time my wife and I went on a Greatland Adventures northern lights tour. The first time was two years ago out of Anchorage. Jacob was our guide. He took us to a location where the sky was initially clear. When the clouds started rolling in, he took us to another location where we ultimately experienced the northern lights! The experience was awesome, but the lights were more on the horizon than overhead. We wanted to try to see if we could get a better view of the lights, so this time we flew into Fairbanks. Fairbanks is positioned right under the aurora oval. The night we signed up for was cloudy, so they rescheduled us for the next night. That night was also cloudy, so they rescheduled us again. I like that they try to make sure you have the best opportunity to see the lights during your available time window. Finally, the skies cleared up and we went out for our tour. Our guide that night was Cody. It was crazy cold (-30 F), but that made for a cloudless night. Cody took us out to their viewing property, which is about a 45 minute drive out of Fairbanks. The property has a viewing deck and heated yurts where you can stay warm while you're waiting to view the lights. The activity level was initially low, but Cody took some photos of us that still showed the aurora. About 1:00 am, the activity level increased and we were treated to an amazing display of the aurora borealis! If you are thinking about coming up to Alaska to see the northern lights, I highly recommend Greatland Adventures!
I had a wonderful experience! Dana was super thoughtful and her excitement and positive energy is contagious! I highly recommend this tour whether you’re traveling with friends or solo. Thank you!!!
Our guide, Aaron, was a fantastic guy. He seemed genuine and very knowledgeable about the Aurora Lights. He did a great job talking to us, explaining the process of how the lights occur and the best ways to see them. With that being said; we unfortunately didn’t get to see the lights. Aaron was driving us to different locations and trying to chase openings in the clouds but because of how cloudy it was; we were just unable to really see anything. Apparently the lights were in full brightness but cloud coverage was too strong. It was disheartening to see Aaron swipe through the gallery on his professional camera and see how beautiful the Aurora lights are; only to look up and be met with dark clouds and the slightest green tint from the auroras attempting to peek out. Aaron drove all night to different locations and on one particular instance before 4am that I found kinda cute was everyone in the bus was sleeping soundly. It’s unfortunate that my bucket list item of seeing the Auroras will still remain. I’m sure the tour is generally amazing but that particular night wasn’t so.
