We totally enjoyed the experience. Although there was a bit of rain, we were prepared, and there were whales!
Amazing! Guide was great. We saw 3-4 whales. Ship staff and crew were also great.
We were very lucky to see a blue whale which stayed around the boat for about 45 minutes plus, later on, a minke whale. Our guides commentary was so very informative and enthusiastic and the tannoy system was extremely clear throughout the boat. Would recommend this trip 100%.
It was a very special experience. Everything was well organised, and the guide was knowlegeable and enthusiastic. We found a group of three humpback whales feeding. They kept going down into the deep to feed and then coming back up for a while. The ship followed them around for some. It was difficult to know where exactly they would come back up. By following them a few times they managed to once get very close. There was lots of oooh-ing and aaaah-ing of the crowed when they showed their arched backs (a bit like dolphins, just not fully airbound) right next to the ship, and later their tailfins when they dived back down, one after the other. The tour was a bit over 3 hours long, I think even 3 1/2 hours. After the tour, we all got a link to photographs taken by the crew. So if you prefer just to watch without looking through the phone/camera all the time, you can do so. Or if you just didn't catch them in the right moment, you'll get some beautiful pictures anyway.
Nice ride on the boat….good talk about the area and wildlife. Did see the tails of a whale. I know one never knows when they will appear.
Beautiful scenery, nice boat ride, saw whales!
Seeing humpbacks in their natural environment was the highlight of my birthday. The crew was knowledgeable, friendly, and genuinely excited to help everyone spot wildlife. The jokes and puns were funny. The hot chocolate afterward was exactly what we needed after being out on the cold water. An unforgettable experience."
The captain of the boat did an awesome job turning the boat so we all could see each of the whales. We saw several whales and it was a wonderful tour.
We spent a beautiful morning on the water and were able to see several whales. Our marine biologist gave us lots of information about the animals in the area. The sun was shining and the water was calm. Great boat and crew!
Very comfortable environment and knowledgeable people on the boat. We loved that we received pictures from the tour operators afterwards.
Dress warmly - but they did have very warm overalls to borrow which really helped. We saw a lot of whales - pretty constant sightings for about an 1 1/2 hours. Overall exceeded expectations
Well what an experience. The young lady guide stated that the weather was very unusual, very calm but with a strong breeze. She also stated that they had never had to go so far out to spot whales, and then it all really kicked off. We saw some amazing once in a lifetime whale displays. Thank you all so much.
Very poor 3 hour trip only 2.5 hrs Taken around the fiord and not into the open sea where another company had gone and saw whales Make sure they plan to do the 3 hour whale watching trip and will take you out into the open ocean as that is where you are likely to see whales If they change the time of the trip or itinerary I would cancel and use some one else
Great trip, worth the money! The captain knew just where the whales were. It was a great excursion for my husband and our friends. I got some terrific pictures.
on time and found the Whale. Very well done from check-in to boarding and a great cruise. Lots of fog but the crew persisted and we saw the Hump Back whale.
No whales were watched. Hard to hear guide on loud speakers. They offered us tickets to use on a future trip, except that we probably will not come back.
Great trip, went to the whale feeding ground and the boat stayed and went round and round till they saw the whales, saw about eight of them.
We knew seeing any whales wasn’t a guarantee but were lucky enough to see a couple of humpbacks and a couple of minkes. The staff knew a lot about the whales and their behaviors. It was chilly on the outside decks especially when the boat was moving. We sat inside until a whale was spotted and then went outside to see them. The boat was full but not so crowded that we couldn’t see anything. The captain maneuvered the boat so that people on either side of the boat could see the whales at some point. The tour was just long enough. We were completely satisfied.
Great trip up to the end of the fjord hunting for whales. We have been lucky to see two humpback whales. The crew and guide were nice and knowledgeable. They have sent us professional photos after the trip. We were not disappointed, highly recommended.
Two pairs of humpbacks kept popping up to be seen. A memorable day in the fjord. The guide took some great photos and shared with me.
Enjoyed the excursion and saw six or seven whales. Suits provided kept me warm and was able to stay on top of boat for a better view.
Magical experience. The crew is friendly and very knowledgeable about the whales and their environment. Very worthwhile experience! Dress warm and expect to get wet.
We saw many minke whales swimming around the boat. The captain arrived at a feeding area teeming with fish, which drew the whales. It was a perfect spot. Everywhere you looked there were whales. Minkes are not jumpers but they were sleek and graceful swimmers. An experience of a lifetime for me. I was ecstatic. We booked on viator for $100 each. The cruise ship charged $300 each for exact same trip on the exact same boat. Viator is a reliable, cost-effective tour organizer. Why pay more to the cruise company?!!
The overall experience met expectations! We had great views of humpback whales feeding near the surface and then diving with their flukes in the air. The boat was plenty comfortable and didn't feel crowded. There were places to view the whales on the deck in the open air and then also places of comfort to retreat to when the wind picked up. The double hull boat design reduced the rocking motion a lot as we navigated well up the fjord. Our host was amiable, amusing, and knowledgeable.
We booked this excursion through Viking Cruises. It was a short bus ride (about 2 minutes) from the ship to the tour. The tour guide had a degree in biology, which made the tour better. The boat held about 30 people. We rode out for about 45 minutes. The view out is beautiful. It is very cold. Gloves and a hat are a good idea. I was glad that I had those little packs that you crack and they get warm. The tour company has jumpsuits that you can use, which will keep you warm. You can also sit inside, but then you miss the whales. There were 4 boats in the same spot watching a group of whales that were swimming around. One of the whales jumped completely out of the water. That was very cool. Another whale come vertically out of the water and then slid back into the water. We saw plenty of whales and we were all happy.
We went whale watching in the Fjord on the sixth of February with a french group of students. We saw 6 Humpback's whales from very close by. They were curious and came towards the boat the Ambassador. It was a breathtaking encounter and some of the students were even crying so special was the encounter. Even the captain and the guide Ania were exited by this exceptional encounter. We got very professional guiding by Ania and for some students this was the best day of their life!! Thank you so much for this unforgettable whale watching trip❤️🐋❤️
We booked a whale hunting trip in Akureyri because we were informed that was the best way of seeing sea life. However if we had known the boat was only going to travel the same route as the Cruise ship then I wouldn't have booked it !! I know that we are in the laps of the gods with regards to whale/dolphin spotting and the staff on the boat were very knowledgeable about sea life & bird activities & in that aspect ot was a good trip. However having just cruised the same waters on the ship it eas a tad disappointingly. Sorry to give a rather negative view but those are my feelings
After wanting a sighting of humpback whales for over 25 years, the feeling of an actual sighting cannot be put into words.
The ship and crew were fine and very knowledgeable. The only problem was we really saw no whales. Of course, that's always the chance you take, but that's why I gave it a 3 rating. The whale ship was docked extremely close to our NCL cruise ship so it was easy to get there by walking. The walk to the whale ship sponsored by the cruise line would have been a much longer walk.
Very low quality tour experience. We did not see any whale or any dolphin but that s not all. The tour is very long (3.5 hours), looks like a ferry trip (no stop, very low interaction, just a non stop full gas loop around an island ) and not interesting (oral comments at the microphone on a old factory and a village but you stay very far from the coast so you don't see anything). For sure it must have been better if we had seen any whale but, anyway, for me it does not worth the very high price as the cruise is not very pleasant. In the end we had a voucher to do it again within 2 years - not sure at all we would do it again even if we had the opportunity to do it.
Tour gor canceled the day before for insufficient booking. We still got a refund so at least they are sincere.
Really enjoyed our whale watching trip! We were able to see several humpback whales. The staff was very friendly and informative. They provided warm “jumpsuits” for us along with hot beverages. I would recommend this tour!
The whale watching trip was some 3hours and we saw some whales. The guide told us alot about the sealife here. Boat was good. They told us there were some blankets, raincoats and overalls, but we found them a bit too late. It was really cold. Over all the experiense was good.
It was really disaponting that we saw no whales. We started from Darvik for a better chance to see them with no luck. There were people on second try to see them with no success. I wound't try it again.
Poor sound system couldn’t hear commentary. Large boat to crowded 3 deep on side on boat, no chance to see any whales. Crew didn’t position boat properly so everyone had a chance to see any activity
We were fortunate to have perfect weather conditions for our 3 hour whale watching cruise, and we came across at least 5, if not 6, different humpback whales in the course of the trip. There were explanations of what to expect from the whales' activities and the boat kept it's distance so as not to cause disruption, yet close enough to observe clearly (particularly with binoculars).
We took a morning excursion on a RIB boat and were not disappointed. The staff were very accommodating. We had great weather, and the fjord was very calm. We first saw a minke whale at some distance. But pretty quickly came across a pair of humpbacks. I was surprised at how close they came to the boat as they fed – they didn’t seem too worried about us. Impressive creatures and a wonderful experience.
Lucky for us the trip was in great sunny weather (although it was chilly of course) showing off the beautiful scenery as we travelled towards the sea in search of whales. We were not disappointed. The boat got us amongst the humpbacks within the first hour. We saw several of them sometimes in pairs and on occasion were very close to them. One actually jumped out of the water putting on a spectacular splash. Several gave a fantastic view of their tails as they deep-dived. Three hours passed in a flash. An unforgettable experience.
The tour goes through the fijord and you get a good view of Akureyri from the water. The guide points out sights along the way that you would otherwise not notice. They do not guarantee that they will find whales, but we found a pair coasting along side by side and followed them. They never did any amazing tail shows but nevertheless, rose to the surface. It was a beautiful outing and the crew on the boat were very courteous. Dress warmly. If you get too cold, there are chairs in a covered enclsoed area where you can still observe the whales on the outside.
I have mixed reviews of this tour. We did see a whale, as promised, but we literally chased the same whale the entire 3-hour tour. I really expected after we saw it twice or so we would move on and see about finding another. We did not. We saw the same humpback whale breach and dive back down to feed like 10 times. It was cool and I am glad I got to see a whale, but I wished we could have moved on and seen more. I get that they would probably rather guarantee more sightings with the same whale than taking the risk on going out to find more and not, but it would have been more exciting to go see more, to me at least. Also, I really expected it to be a smaller tour and it appeared as though we were combined with another tour company on a much larger boat.
We saw five whales and watched a cruise ship pass by. It was a fun trip. The overalls were free and provided lots of warmth. The ride was never too rough. There was a snack bar with beer and other drinks. The tour guide was good, but could have provided some more details about the fjord and mountains during the waiting times for watching whales.
Supercool experience with professional staff that took good care of us! I recommend this tour because the company were really respectful of the whales and their privacy, for example they made sure that they didn't stay with the same whale for a long time or went too close to fast. The guide were telling us interesting information about the whales and their lives. We saw several whales on our tour!
We drove all the way to Akureyri to see the whales. The tour was scheduled at 1pm. We got there at 12:30pm. We were pretty excited about the whale watching and drove on the slippery winter road from Myvan. As soon as I got into the office, the front desk told me the trip was cancelled because they would only go if there are 8+ people, and there were only 2. He told me he called me and left voicemail the very morning. I put down my U.S. number when I signed up for the tour and changed SIM card when landed in Iceland so I didn't get the message. Neither did I get any email notification. 1. When I booked the trip, there should be a disclaimer that reads "Trip subject to cancellation if customers are 8 or less" 2. I should be contacted as many ways as possible to let me know the tour is cancelled. 3. The trip was cancelled not because of weather or uncontrollable conditions, merely because of company profit concern. This is not how customers should be treated 4. We offered to double the price and meet them in the middle, but the front desk told me the captain was already gone. The experience is 0 star. Front desk was nice and apologetic, 2 stars for him.

Unbelivable fantastic amazing so lucky and blessed to see so many humpback whales

A nice excursion to see whales. The crew of the boat is welcoming, Customer Service. We could see whales up close. That's great! A nice exit.
Fantastic experience Boat equipped with all amenities (we were given overalls or raincoat). Price less than half of what the Costa Cruises excursion requires. Recommended great!!! Very kind ticket office!!!
Eine wundervolle Tour. Bei traumhaftem Wetter haben wir über eine Stunde drei Buckelwale beobachtet, die beim Fressen waren. Einer ist direkt am Schiff aufgetaucht.
Nice outing in the fjord with a very stable boat so no risk of seasickness. 2 whales come very close. Sending photos after the release.
Die Anzahl der zu beobachtenden Wale war beeindruckend. Es wurde dabei sehr behutsam agiert. Man hatte nicht den Eindruck, dass den Tieren Stress erzeugt wurde. Immer wieder.
