This was an excellent day trip. Our guide was top notch. She spoke the whole time on the bus explaining what we were seeing and about what we were about to see. When our ship extended our rebounding time, she and driver decided to take a different route back and show us some extra things we would have not normally seen. This was way above our expectations. Booking The Traveling Viking was the best decision we have made. This excursion was my favourite of the whole trip. Our only wish was that Iceland provided better washroom facilities for the number of people who are visiting. For older people this is an issue.

Itinerary
After around 35 min drive from Akureyri we come to Godafoss, one of Iceland´s most beautiful and uniquely shaped waterfalls. Here we tell you why the falls are important in Icelandic history and give you enough time to explore the area close up.
Skútustaðagígar are definatly one of the Icelandic gems. One of the landmarks in Lake Myvatn area are these unique and beautifully formed crater. They are called pseudo craters as they are not caused by the actual explosion of volcanos, but our guide will tell you all about them.
We take our time to drive around the lake during the day and visit many different places. Dimmuborgir is a unique and very interesting area. Visitors are given time to walk among the unusual lava sculptures, pillars and caves. Our guides know everything about this area and will be happy to walk with you to explain how the area was created 2,500 years ago, as well as tell you a few folktales about the local trolls.
Hverir is a geothermal area at the foothill of Namaskard near Lake Myvatn. Features include colorful sulphur mud pits, steam vents, cracked mud and fumaroles. This area is colorful, mystic and extremely beautiful...but a bit smelly of all the sulphur

Small group tour of the area. Our guide grew up in the area and told stories of his youth. Godafoss is breathtaking. Dimmuborgir was fun to walk around and look at the lava formations. Well paced - didn’t feel rushed.
This was convenient for us as we walked into it right off the cruise ship. I don’t see the appeal with going to Myvatn Lake, the bugs are literally relentless trying to get into your nose and eyes it’s like a Hitchcock movie. The seller of the tour said we’d be seeing the gap between the tectonic plates and we didn’t get to see that. The guide was nice enough but I would have appreciated more facts about Iceland. For the same price for two people it would be better to hire a car and go at your own pace. You could also stop for lunch wherever you liked that way. It was impossible to eat at the restaurant they stopped at for us because they hadn’t booked us inside and you can’t eat in a bug infestation.
Fun tour with great guide and driver. Great sights even in the rain. Waterfall was worth the trip.
This tour would have been 5 stars except for the extremely annoying flies (midges) which affected 2 of the 4 stops. Many people were wearing netting over their faces which I assumed they purchased separately or were provided by their tour operator; however, The Traveling Viking, the operator under this Viator tour did not supply these, and it was very difficult to enjoy these 2 sites with the intensity of the flies. Fortunately, they didn’t seem to bite. Godafoss waterfall beautiful—and crowded as were all of the stops. The Skutustaoagigar crater area also lovely, but this is where the flies first showed up in mass. Next stop was the fascinating Dimmuborgir lava formations. Lots to see but annoying flies led to early retreat to the gift shop/cafe and back on the bus to escape the pesky flies. Final stop at the Namafjall Hverir geothermal area was outstanding, and NO flies and we had sufficient time to explore the area and take photos. Driver Oscar and guide Tina were very good. I would recommend this tour, but would suggest asking if flies expected on your dates of travel, and if so, will operator supply face netting. We were there 8/18/26.
Very good tour, except we did not stop at the cave with water pictured on the booking page. Not enough time to properly visit Godafoss falls. Great driver and guide.
It was a great tour. We later did a Diamond Tour too, so there was a bit of overlap. But we were very glad to have done this one too, to see some more points of interest around the Myvatn Lake, like the pseudocraters and the Dimmuborgir lava formations. The tour was well organised, although we had to wait quite a long time for pick-up. That was because the cruise ship had moored away from the harbour, so tour passengers from there (we weren't on the ship) had to be brought to shore on a boat. I don't think The Traveling Viking could have done anything about it. They were very friendly and helpful when we rang them. They also communicated well before the tour, when they got in touch to discuss whether we wanted to go on the German or the English tour (we didn't mind, and were placed into the German one). The tour guide was very good and gave us loads of information. We were puzzled because she occasionally struggled to find a German word but on the other hand had no accent whatsoever. It all made sense when she told us that she spent her early childhood in Germany but hadn't used her German much since then. The lack of an accent made it really easy to understand her, compared to other tour guides. We also felt that she looked after us exceptionally well, taking a lot of precautions to prevent loosing anybody or for anyone to get hurt (we were well warned of the dangers of the hot sulphur pits at Hverir!). We were very pleased with our tour to the volcanic wonders and Godafoss waterfall provided by this vendor. We visited Akureyri on a cruise ship stop and this tour provided more than the cruise tour would have at a lower cost.
Our tour was spectacular!! The sights were unlike any encountered in years of travel. Lily our guide clearly articulated directions , meeting points and times. On the ride into the mountains and back she told us stories, historical facts and even brought details of how native Icelanders live, eat and find entertainment. She is a gem.
Took the Lake Myvatan classic Tour - it was great and hit a lot of great spots, highly recommend. Tour guide did great job of keeping people on schedule by giving clear times at each spot. She also explained lots of local information along the way which was nice. But please ask the people on the bus for feedback on temperature. Bus was freezing whole way back, people were putting on coats.
Very interesting tour to waterfall, geo thermal activity (steam vents etc) lava rock and fissures from shifting continental plates plus lake myavtn Lilja the tour guide was excellent as she is a local with detailed insights into Icelandic culture and the local area/sights. Coach was comfortable and driver was a good safe driver. Take some insect repellent for midgies.
Excelent tour, the bus picked us at the ship dock (despite changed docking due to weather conditions) and also leaved us there at the end of the tour. The guide Juliana was eceptional, she shared a lot of very interesting islandic stories and facts. There was a lot of stops and enough time to see so many extraordinary scenes. Really good organization, bus driver Oscar and tour guide Juliana were amazing.
Really enjoyed this trip , we got to see everything as detailed in the itinerary with extra short stops for photos , great driver and host , comfortable bus , would recommend . Be aware some of the stops charged for use of toilets and we found midge nets very useful
We booked this tour last minute when another tour company had to cancel and we were very pleased with the tour guide, itinerary and bus driver. Designed for cruise ship passengers - pickup and drop off was near the pier and return was carefully timed for our ship’s departure time. The itinerary covered all the highlights of the area. We especially enjoyed the Godafoss Falls and Dimmuborgir. Fortunately the midges (bugs) were minimal at Lake Myvatn because it was breezy and cool. We brought head net coverings but didn’t need to use them. There were enough midges that I can see how annoying they would be on a warmer, calm day. Guide was informative. Would recommend this tour. It was a much lower price than similar cruise ship excursions.
Great guide beautiful scenery amazing history our guide was extremely informative and helpful we learned a lot and saw a lot in our time there
Great tour to see Lake Myvatn! Our tour guide, Lilja (sp?), was fantastic and showed us all of the highlights in the Lake Myvatn area. She provided interesting information both at the stops and in the car rides in between. She was extremely patient with our tour group (~7 people), even when some of the guests weren't as cooperative. The tour started at 9 am in the morning and ended at around 4:30 pm for us as we decided to leave the tour at the Forest Lagoon stop. For those that aren't interested in the Forest Lagoon, she dropped them off at their pick-up locations. For those that are visiting the Forest Lagoon, they offer a free shuttle back to Akureyri center. They market this as a pick-up service, but they're happy to drop off guests if they're already at the Forest Lagoon as well.
The tour was absolutely amazing. Our driver and guide, Lilja, was incredibly attentive and accommodating. When we realized there had been a miscommunication about the pick-up time, she went all the way to the airport to pick up my friend on the day she landed so we could still join the tour together. We were truly grateful for her extra effort. It was a beautiful day, and the sights were breathtaking: a great variety of locations and very well paced. Along the way, Lilja shared many interesting stories and insights, and constantly made sure everyone was comfortable. Highly recommended! A wonderful experience from start to finish.
We did the Lake Myvatn tour with Lilja as our guide. It is one of the best tours I have done ever- there was so much diversity and the sights were stunning. Lilja was incredibly knowledgeable and answered our many questions, as well as giving us a good insight into the geology and history of the area. She was friendly and informative. I recommend this tour 100% and hope to do it again in the future when we return with our adult son. Thank you Lilja and the Traveling Viking tour company!
Fantastic experience and very knowledgeable and humorous guide. Inga went above and beyond with the 8 ‘Travelling Geriatrics’ on both trips we did with him. He even rang us to tell us that there was Aura activity down on the harbour where we were staying! We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them.
Great and friendly tourguide with alot of knowledge about the area. Enough time at every stop to enjoy the views and take some photographs.
Wonderful experience, we went to all the must see places and spent a good amount of time at each stop. Tour guide is friendly and knowledgeable, had a great time listening to some of the fun facts while enjoying the amazing scenery.
Our tour guide/driver was incredibly professional, especially at the volcanic rock area. He meticulously explained what each rock resembled, and his service was exceptionally attentive.
I can definitely recommend this tour company - the guide was knowledgeable and friendly, an excellent driver, and gave us plenty of information to keep us awake on the long drive. There were only three of us (plus the guide) on this tour but it never felt awkward. I would recommend this tour especially if you want to experience more of the Icelandic highlands. This was genuinely one of the best tours I've ever been on. We saw some amazing scenery and our guide, Lilja, kept us entertained with stories about growing up in Iceland and what it's like living there, as well as about trolls and other Icelandic myths. She was happy to answer all of our questions. We left the tour with a new-found appreciation of the island and its beauty.
Excellent tour. Brilliant places visited. Fantastic guide who was very knowledgeable, helpful and polite. He could not do enough for you.
We were given the option when booking of 9am or 10am, so chose the 10am as we were on a late night Northern Lights tour the night before. At 9am on the day of the trip we had a call to ask where we were, to be told there was no 10am option! Luckily we were ready and our guide actually came to our apartment to pick us up! During the trip we heard a mention of thermal baths, but this wasnt on the trip we had booked, and we hadnt brought swimming gear! We purposely chose this trip for that reason as we had a trip booked for the Forest Lagoon the following day, so didn't want to do 2 'spa' trips. Our guide from 'The Travelling Viking' was very understanding and took photos of our booking and itinerary to feed back to Viator, as this was not the fault of her company. Due to this, we did find ourselves with 2 hours to fill at the Thermal Baths, so ended up buying coffee and a sandwich and spending the time in the cafe, along with a short walk around the area outside. Aside from this, we dont want to take anything away from 'The Travelling Viking' as the day was amazing, our guide was fantastic, giving us lots of information and stories along the way. We went to the most amazing places and saw the most beautiful scenery we could ever imagine. A full day out and a magical experience. 10/10 for the travelling viking, the guide and the trip, 5/10 for viator. Viator need to make sure the time and the itinerary is updated, as we could easily have missed the trip if it wasnt for the guide, and we would have been extremely disappointed to have missed an amazing day out.
It was an amazing tour, Iceland as you would expect it! Our guide was fantastic, she talked about many things, also the life in Iceland, and stopped for example when we saw sheepherding and explained how they get the sheep together. I learned a lot about many different things!
For the most part, this was a nice tour. Unfortunately, I chose this particular tour to see two specific locations, and our guide skipped the location that I wanted to see the most. In their defense, I would imagine the reason for this was the extremely inconsiderate person in our group who went missing for 20 minutes and threw us off schedule for the rest of the day. So, that was outside of the tour guide's control. That said, though... the stop we were supposed to make (Grjótagjá cave) was allotted only 20 minutes on the itinerary, and our guide made two extra stops (about 15 min each) that weren't on the itinerary at all. We also arrived back at our dropoff location a bit early. I appreciate that he showed us the extra stops, in an attempt to make up for the skipped location- that was very thoughtful of him. But with the extra time we apparently had, I really would have preferred to go to the location that was promised/advertised. Or, at the very least, I wish he had *informed* us that we would be skipping the cave. If he had, we would have had the option to not get back on the bus and find our own way to the cave. Instead, it did not become apparent to us that the cave was removed from the itinerary until we were already stuck on the bus leaving the area. Another thing worth mentioning, is that there was a minor issue with the bus at one of the stops- and I was very impressed at the efficiency with which the guide/company fixed the issue. While we were exploring one of our stops, they contacted the company and we had a new bus already delivered and waiting for us by the time we made it back to the lot. The guide was pleasant, and I appreciated his commentary. We were given a lot of time to explore at each location, though I would have been okay being rushed if it meant we were able to go to all the stops on the itinerary. So, thank you for the nice tour. I really did see some incredible sights, and I recognize that that is still a "win", at the end of the day. I am just really disappointed that I didn't get to see the place that I wanted to see most, and was not given a chance to rectify it before it was too late. I won't be able to afford to come back for a very long time, so it will just have to continue to remain on my bucket list for another several years.
It was amazing! The tour guide Ingimundur was so knowledgeable and took his time on the tour. He was also a great photographer!
Surprisingly only my friends and I (4 of us) on the mini bus which gave us a bit more flexibility with the schedule. Lilian was a great guide and driver, very informative and knowledgeable. Enjoyed the Beautiful and dramatic landscapes in the autumn colours and the drive back via the mountain pass. Had a lovely lamb soup at our choice of restaurant (rather than busy scheduled stop). Lilian very accommodating with what we wanted and was lovely - sorry we couldn’t give her a tip as we had no cash
This trip was a great way to see a lot of Iceland beautiful scenery in one day. Our driver, became guide and driver after the guide fell ill and did a great job. We had a great day. The only thing I would mention is for the company to upgrade their description on Viator. They advertise as a small group tour and they are not.
The tour guide was fun an informative. We did this as a cruise excursion (not through expensive cruise ship). It was a fantastic way to the area. We saw lots of major sites and learned about Iceland from a local.
We paid extra to have a smaller group and the description showed up to 11. When we got on tour it was a big bus full of people. Did not see everything that was listed. Also was a little rushed.
What a wonderful day, jam packed with sights of Iceland and Graham, our driver, was very knowledgeable. The small group made the trip a lot more personal
Tour was more than we expected. The guide, Ingimundur was knowledgeable and entertaining. The scenery, stunning. And a small group with excellent tour bus. Loved it. 😍
This is a wonderful overview of the area at just the right pace. We did this tour via small bus on 4 AUG 2025 and Lily was an excellent guide! She knew how to drop us at Goðafoss to avoid the crowds from the big buses while making sure we had enough time to truly enjoy the spectacular scenery at each location. I would definitely book with TTV again!
Our driver and tour guide Ingimundur booked using Aviator was awesome and made the trip more pleasurable and fun.
Great tour to get a taste of several sights in Akureyri., Didn't feel rushed, but don't expect to explore each extensively.
Our guide Ingi took us on a tour of the Mývatn Lake area, caves, godifoss waterfall, geothermal caves, etc. it was such a nice day. Ingi was full of so much info about the topgraphy, culture and Iceland’s history as he is Icelandic himself. I highly recommend Ingi. He was also so kind and helpful with my 82 year old mom who has limited mobility. Thank you!
We thoroughly enjoyed this tour from Akureyri. Our guide Ingi was very knowlegable and personable. The scenery is breathtaking and interesting. We loved the lunch stop and the homemade soup and geothermal baked brown bread. We highly recommend this tour from Akureyri and Ingi from The Traveling Viking.
We were picked up at our cruise ship port by Inky and it was a very good experience. We went first to Godafoss falls. He was informative, funny and so thoughtful to our entire group. We had kids to seniors and he helped us all. He told us legends and stories of the areas. We saw trolls in rock formation. Gorgeous waterfalls and he explained so much geology, of the volcanos, glaciers and hot pots. We saw fissures and underground bathing pools. We would definitely do this tour again.
We had a good time learning things about the Akureyri area. The tour guide was new, but she handled things well. The bus driver was knowledgeable and passed that information onto us visitors. The bus was not comfortable. It was too warm at times and the seats were very close to each other so I felt like my knees were always pushing on the seat in front of me.
Our bus driver and tour guide were fantastic! Highly recommend this tour! Our guides were entertaining and informative. We had 5 kids with us and the guides were so good to them!
We had a great day tour to Lake Myvatyn and the surrounding area, including Godavoss Waterfall. Our guide Lijia took great care of us. She was on time, very friendly, knowledgeable and informative. We enjoyed the sights and her stories about the area and Iceland in general. We highly recommend this tour, this company, and Lijia as a great guide!
Graham is the best! We did a few tours is Iceland and this one was amazing. Graham explained all the sites and talked a lot about the culture and curiosities of this beautiful country. A+
“Ingi” (Ingimundur Robertsson) local tour guide/driver at waiting area in red jacket with tour company logo. He stayed until 9am to see if he could get more customers. Ingi knew the area very well since he had grown up in the area & talked passionately about the Lake Myvatn area. What my husband & I were highly offended by was his constant talking about how his college friend took pictures of his a** jumping over where the ground had split at the Grjotagja Cave & even went as far as showing pictures of himself naked jumping over & stating his friend wanted him to post it on Facebook. If you get Ingi as your guide, make sure you strongly state you are not interested in looking at his personal photos.
Our guide Ingi met us at the port and we travelled in a comfortable minivan. He was a fantastic guide, very amusing, full of great stories and very informative and knowledgeable. We had a wonderful day and saw some incredible sights. Would highly recommend this tour.
Beautiful expedition. Our guide Lilja was really kind and interesting. We had a wonderful day. I would 100% recommend it.
Great tour and amazing guide!! Patient and knowledgeable! I would definitely recommend this tour!!☺️
Amazing trip! Would highly recommend. The weather was full on but our tour guide/driver made us feel in very safe hands. She was very knowledgeable and so warm towards our children. The stops were breathtaking and this a day we will remember forever. Thank you!
