Itinerary
The House of the Virgin Mary (or Meryem Ana Evi in Turkish) is a place where, according to the beliefs of many people Mary, the mother of Jesus, spent the last years of her life. She was supposed to arrive at Ephesus together with St. John and lived there in the years 37-45 CE until her Assumption (according to Catholic doctrine) or Dormition (according to Orthodox belief).
Of Turkey's hundreds of ancient cities and classical ruins, Ephesus is the grandest and best preserved. Indeed, it's the best place on the Mediterranean to get a feel for what life was like in ancient times. Ancient Ephesus was a great trading city and a centre for the cult of Cybele, the Anatolian fertility goddess.
The Odeion of Ancient Ephesus is a small, semi-circular theater originally constructed in the 2nd century A.D and financed by PubliusVedius Antonius and his wife FlaviaPaiana. The building would have served as a space for political meetings, social events, concerts and theatrical performances.
This temple dedicated to the Emperor Hadrian is considered one of the best preserved and most beautiful structures on Curetes Street. It was constructed in the beginning of the 2nd century AD by P. Quintilius to celebrate Hadrian visiting the city from Athens.
Bibliotheque de Celsus, Selcuk, Turkey This magnificent library dating from the early 2nd century AD, the best-known monument in Ephesus, has been extensively restored. Originally built as part of a complex, the library looks bigger than it actually is: the convex facade base heightens the central elements, while the middle columns and capitals are larger than those at the ends. Facade niches hold replica statues of the Four Virtues. From left to right, they are Sophia (Wisdom), Arete (Goodness), Ennoia (Thought) and Episteme (Knowledge).
The great theater of Ephesus is a splendidly preserved and very impressive building. This structure, built of marble, has a width of 145 meters, and its audience once reached up to 30 meters. In its heyday, it could accommodate up to 24,000 spectators. The construction of the theater began in Hellenistic times.
Temple of Artemis (or Artemision), one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. In an empty field to the west of the centre, this lone reconstructed pillar is all that remains of the massive Temple of Artemis (or Artemision) At its zenith, the temple counted 127 columns.
Isabey mosque was built in a post-Seljuk/pre-Ottoman transitional style, when Selcuk was capital of the Aydin Emirate. An inscription in Arabic above the main entrance states that it was built in 1375.

Our guide Octavio was amazing and was very knowledgeable . He knew everything about every single site !! I would choose him again.
Our guide, Faiz, was energetic and able to communicate well with our group of 10 or so, spanning young children to older adults. I appreciated the balance between listening to information about the different sites and having time to explore on our own. The later demonstration of silk making and carpet weaving was very interesting.
Faisal has a lot of knowledge about pagan gods and symbols, as well as historical facts about Ephesus and surrounding sites that made this an enjoyable and educational tour. A good alternative to a private tour at half the price. Of course, the usual shopping component was included (carpet school, leather jackets) but that is the norm, and was somewhat educational in this case.
Three mentioned stops: St Mary's house, Ancient City of Efes, temple of Artemis (most sites mentioned at the description are just stops along the course of visit of the main archaeological site) and two unmentioned LONG stops at shops (a carpet weaving "school" and a leather goods store, complete with a catwalk fashion show just for our small group). Guide was average, with many sensational narratives unrelated to the sights. The "homemade" lunch was offered in one of the shops, a place no locals would ever visit for lunch.
Brings the ancient city of Ephesus to life. Knowledgeable but not boring. Good judge of the needs and interests of the group. Highly recommend
Joseph was our guide and interpreter for 6 day trip excursions over a week long stay in Kusadasi. His knowledge of classical Greco-Roman culture, civilization, and architecture was deep and thorough. As well his ability to translate and transition between Turkish and English made his presence invaluable for our group with a limited knowledge of the language. He is very personable and a great listener. We wish we could’ve brought him along to the next stop on our trip, Istanbul!!! Highly recommend
Excellent tour company, Coskun our guide always going beyond to help us. He is very knowledgeable. The vehicles comfortable and the food was good.
Dear Guray, we want to thank you for your kind attention and professionalism during our group tour of Ephesus, it has been exceptional and memorable, we recommend you very well, excellent. Thanks a lot Estimado Guray, queremos agradecer por su amable atención y profesionalismo durante nuestra excursión en grupo por Efeso, ha sido excepcional y memorable, la recomendamos bastante bien, excelente. Muchas gracias
Visited Ephesus by myself, and was in a need of a tour guide to appreciate the ruins. Marsy was our tour guide and she was just great--knowledgeable, enthusiastic, warm. helpful. She really brought the site to life, and would highly recommend this tour to anyone!
Visited Ephesus with my wife in March 2020. We chose Alaturka & was given Marsy as our tour guide. We had a great time with her. She made the ruins come alive with her stories & captured our imagination esp in the library ... hahaha! Thank you so much Marsy! My wife was so happy that she wanted to come back with our children in the future. So that our children can appreciate modern amenities. We appreciate Turkey's rich heritage of ionites, romans, byzantiums, turks, etc ...so interesting that we paid attention! Also, thank you Marsy for giving us tips on photography spots. You are such a gem! Good job Alaturka... worth every euro & more!
We took the small group tour for Pamukkale and Ephesus , we had the best guide Marsy - she’s so warm, energetic and loving , she made us totally comfortable during our tour on both the days.... It’s so evident that she loves people and loves her job, I feel that we were extremely lucky to have had her as our guide and now we’ve gained a friend for life , if I get to visit Turkey again , I will make sure I visit Marsy no matter where she is!!!!
Marsi.. you are one of a kind!!! Because of you, I will have high expectations with tour guides from now on. You are the best! My friend and I enjoyed our experience esp in Ephesus. You are very informative. In fact, the way you tell the history of each places is like you're doing a story telling to your kids. You are so fun to be with and so witty.. and so sweet, and lovely.. and the list goes on.. I bet your "babies" can testify to that. :) Just want to thank you for being so helpful and for making sure we will have the best experience in Turkey. Miss you already! Love you mameeeeeh! <3
Marcy as a tour guide she is able to make you know the history, and also what you really need to know about those places you going visit in Turkey. Plus with her as your tour guide you will never regret as visitors. Her personality is imcompare she is so kind, friendly, open, and so much more that you must experience for yourself with her as you tour guide. I wish her to continue the excellent work and be the best tour guide in turkey. love you marcy, and I know many will miss you.
Amazing tour, Marcy was very informative and fun during all the sites we've visited. If someone asked me whatd do in turkey, Id totally recommend her. If there was a 10 star rating' Id do it. 👍👍👍
Highly recommended. Excellent tour. Our guide was Marsy, a super nice, joyful and knowledgeable girl. We really enjoy this exciting excursion.
Booked online for the Ephesus day tour and got a good deal. Kudos to our guide Guray who was knowledgeable and cared about the interests of the group. He even accommodated our requests to visit St John Basilica which wasn’t on the itinerary.👍🏻👍🏻 Though his English can be a bit hard to understand at times, the tour was still highly informative. The transport was a comfortable Mercedes van and buffet lunch had a nice spread. Well done Alaturka and Guray!
I did Ephesus and Pamukkale tour with alaturka. Amazing experience!! Marcy, the tour guide, is very knowledgeable, accommodating and a sweetheart. She told us a lot about the history of Ephesus. She has good sense of humor too. I would recommend going on the tour.
Very lovely staff and informative. Marsy was our tour guide and she is the best. Learned alot about the old eras and it still in my mind 2 weeks later.
I was on a 5 day tour of Turkey and in Selçuk for one night. The day tour of Ephesus was amazing and Marcy was just amazing very helpful in other matters of my trip. I would recommend this tour for anyone who does go to Turkey. Ephesus day tour is a must.
Marsy was a master piece of this trip of mine out of all Turkey , she made my whole day by her inspiration talk and very organised as well as active doing her tour for us. This is far best out of tour I been any of this trip, with her you won’t regret it. Thank you Marcy ! Loved it
Was fantastic. Take sunblock and hat. Marsy really brought the city to live. A must see I'll say. The food was good too.
The tour was great! Marziye our tour guide was very proactive and even acted out how the ancient men would go to the loo! It was a great experience and would recommend it to anyone!
Mercy mmade our trip rememberable because of mercy,s liveliness and enthusiasm. It was one of the best trips we ever had.she made it so lively, energetic and fun.driver Peter was very good.god bless them.
AlaTurka made everything easy and very accommodating for all my travel needs, the tour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable, our group was treated to lunch and enjoyed every minute of out time here thanks to AlaTurka's amazing team!
The tour started well , we enjoyed the commentary and information Marsy gave. The driver and guide were both polite and helpful. We felt disappointed that we were not allowed enough time to support the local craftsman and merchants as we left Ephesus. We stopped for a buffet lunch which was fine . It was there we began to hear about “ the show “ ... what “show “ could this be ? Nothing on the tour itinerary indicated this . After a brief stop at the Artemis Temple, we were whisked away to a leather goods outlet, served tea and put into a room for a fashion show of leather jackets and coats ! Order cards and pencils provided for our convenience. We felt disappointed and a bit deceived that our time was high jacked to see leather goods . Not cool !
It was a fascinating tour for me to visit the seven churches for 2 days from April 4th to 5th. On the first day we have visited St. Policarp, Philadelphia, Sardis(Sart), Thyateira and Pergamum in Izmir for our private tour. I was fully satisfied with the private tour. It was very helpful as our guide Mrs. Zeynep Elitemiz provided me a plenty of information and the driver drove safely although it was a tough schedule of about 400km long distance trip. In particular, Köfteci we had for lunch at Ramiz in Akhisar was one of the best Turkish foods during my 2 weeks trip in Türkiye. Ephesus tour of the next day was a small group tour and it was also very interesting due to Marsy’s passionate and attractive guide. I thank you so much for all this that it was a most memorable trip for me due to the arrangement of the travel agency Alaturka and the two able and professional guides (Please, send the pictures to Zeynep.)
Marsy gave us an excellent day in Ephesus! Created a warm atmosphere that encouraged participants to become one over the day!
What a fantastic day of sightseeing. We were lucky to have Marsy as our guide. She is very knowledgeable, enthusiastic and extremely friendly/helpful. She kept our attention with interesting facts and stories of local traditions and history. There are well preserved ruins and Ephesus boast one of the largest libraries from the ancient world. A very well organized tour.
We had a great day at Ephesus despite the rainy day all because of Marsy. She made everyone feel welcome and special, and she did that in the most genuine and friendly manner. I highly recommend her tours.
We visited both places with Alaturka Ephesus small group tours. We were lucky to have Marsy as our guide on both tours. She is an enthusiastic person and her passion for her country stimulating. She explained everything well and it is clear that she has an excellent knowledge of all relevant history and architecture. Pamukkale is impressive even if all the all the phosphorus/salt pools are not full of water. One part was axcessable and tourists can walk in the hot water. Dispite the extensive earthquake damage, there is impressive buildings and sarcophagi to see. Ephesus must have been an amazing city in its day. The restored part of the city is really really impressive. The trips were well organised and the time spend driving to Pamukkale gave an opportunity to see the countryside. Well worth the visits.
I recommended the tour guide, Marsy very much👍👍. Although the weather was so bad that it affected my feeling a little bit . But Marsy was very passionate and tried to gave us the best parts about the history as detailed as she could. It was worthwhile to join her group😉
My mom and I did both one day tours of Ephesus and Pamukkale. Our guides Guray and Marziye were absolutely fantastic and had a deep knowledge of both cities. I connected especially well with Marziye as she had an abundance of energy and enthusiasm and even helped me with some New Year plans in Istanbul! The reason I can't give a 5 star rating has nothing to do with the great guides. If I were rating just them, or our great driver, Mustafa, it would definitely be a 5 star rating. However, on both tours, we were taken to several of those "forced shopping" experiences (an onyx shop, a leather shop, carpet making shop, etc.) It was far too many and took up a lot of our time. The leather making shop was actually one of the most uncomfortable tour experiences I've ever had. We were made to go sit in a dark room where the door was promptly shut and a fashion show complete with a catwalk took place. My mom and I felt incredibly uncomfortable especially considering the products were lamb skin and leather, a pretty controversial item. There were even jokes about murdering the baby calves that morning, which while obviously made in jest, could be terribly offensive and upsetting to a lot of people. I would much rather pay a bit extra and not step foot into any of these shops which were obviously made solely for tourists or, at the very least, only go if requested. Particularly the leather shop should be removed from the itinerary.
Marsy is a really nice guide. She is very passionate and patient all the time! Recommend to join the tour!
Had such a lovely time with our wonderful and experienced tour guide, merci. Loved everything about this tour <3
Great small group, almost felt like a private tour of ephesus and a few surrounding sites. Would highly recommend or anyone who wants a guided tour of the sites. Transport and food is provided (food is a gem).
We did two day tours, one of Ephesus (including trips to Miriam's (Virgin Mary's) house and the site of the temple for Artemis) and one to Pamukkale/Hieropolis. Both tours were very enjoyable and the organisation was very good - from hotel pickup (although slightly late for the second tour), to explaing the things we were viewing, to lunch, and the "sales pitch" visits to a couple of businesses. Coincidently, for both tours, our guide was Marziye and she was a delightful guide - bubbly, helpful, and very knowledgeable. All in all, a very good experience. Cok guzeldiiii❤
Alaturka have been GREAT. Tours and stops just right. Information without overloading. Tour guides SUPER friendly. I love Marziye. She is so bubbly, friendly and helpful. Highly recommended.
I did the full day Ephesus tour with my 6 year old daughter and we had a brilliant time. It was very easy to book the tour (googled) and we were picked up from our hotel. The communication from the company was very reassuring. As for the tour itself- fantastic! Our guide was very knowledgeable and interesting. The minibus was cool and comfortable and our driver did a marvellous job and dropped up back at our hotel. I was initially hesitant about booking a tour online but highly recommend this company. It was well worth it. Thank you!

I was advised to go with a guide to visit Ephesus which is what led me to choose this tour. The guide I ended up with was pleasant and knowledgeable. The site itself is magnificent. In retrospect, I also would like to have had more time to explore on my own, and also to visit the Terrace Houses. The inclusion of two children in the group that day made it so that we rushed perhaps more than other days, and that did not allow time for those who wished to buy the extra ticket and take time to view the terrace houses.
The other perhaps unavoidable extra was visiting a leather shop for a fashion show. The items for sale were beautiful, but it takes time out of a day that I wanted to just spent visiting Ephesus.

My parents were very happy with this tour and Begum was the best possible tour guide!

Met Ismail Kuscu, one of the best people that will enlighten you where u're having with problems about your tours and all. Recently went for the Ephesus tours with his company and it was a great knowledge for me and my wife. His tour guide Tarme was the best explain the historical in details and the way of his delivery was crystal clear with lots of passion. During the our tours 3 guests was stranded coz their guides left them. The beauty is Tarme went to great extend in having the guests joining is in our group tour and Ismail Kuscu was a great help for driving the around as our bus is already full. This i see is the best of people who have great passion in their profession. Thumbs up for these 2 guys. I'll rate them 10/10 as the go out all extend to help anyone even though the guest is not from the same grp. Personally im very satisfied and would recommend anyone who comes to selcuk for tours must go to Alaturka Selcuk and ask for Ismail Kuscu the operation manager. He will help and assist you in regardless of the day and time. Hope u guys out there will support him when tou're in Selcuk. I really enjoy my stay and my next stop is Cappadoccia and i've made my booking with ismail. Thanks guys all the best
Mr. Coşkun, who supported our guidance, gave us the ruins of Ephesus It felt like we were living history. We still have a 2-year-old infant and a 5-year-old child with us We never understood how our history journey went right under the sun that lasted near 4 hours. Fun yet exciting, We spent 4 hours without a full breath. Required source descriptions based on individual research with insights, we made for an unforgettable trip. Probably the only memory we’ll remember at the time :) We also immediately evaluated their recommendations for the city. We really appreciate Mr Coşkun.
The guides are in English, but even though I am not very good at English, there were many explanations that I could understand, not all of them. ^ ^They spoke in a way that was easy to understand ✨ There was also time to take pictures, and I think the overall time allocation for the tour was good without being too long ^-^
