You will love this experience for its thrills and for the deepened educational awareness. The canopy walk was super fun and does require you to walk up steps to the actual canopy. The castle visits were heart wrenching but glad I took the time and witnessed it for myself.

The Cape Coast Castle is the smallest and the only castle built for the purpose of slavery by the Europeans in 1652. The Cape Coast Castle as recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site has become an important site in the remembrance of the history of slavery. On the first Pan African Festival celebrations in 1998, remains of 2 slaves from Jamaica and Barbados were exhumed and brought back to Ghana through the door of no return, now the door of return. This was a symbolic welcome to their descendants saying, they are always free to return to their roots where they were taken. The site has contributed to preserving our history as Africans and helped tell the African perspective to slavery.
The Elmina Castle is the oldest and the largest castle below the Sahara built by the Europeans in 1482. It was initially built as trade settlements with warehouses for keeping goods and items exchanged. Later, the warehouses were converted to male and female dungeons where slaves were kept for a maximum of 3 months to be shipped to the “new world”. The Elmina castle is now recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The Castle has served many purposes like Prisons, as a secondary school, and is now a historical site that connects guests to their heritage and roots.
There would be a visit to the Kakum National Park, the second largest national park in Ghana. It is the home for various animals, reptiles and birds that are dominantly nocturnal; active and usually seen at night. There is a 15 minute walk/hike to the canopy walkway, the main attraction of the visit. The walkway was built by 2 Canadians and 6 Ghanaians in 1994, about 40-50 metres high with a distance of about 350 metres. The walkway gives an aerial view of the forest and guest safety is assured as three of the Ghanaians who helped to build the walkway are still with the park and carry out frequent maintenance. This tour is recommended for those who would want to conquer their fear of heights.

The Cape Coast guided tour was a meaningful and memorable experience, made even better by Mensah’s (tour host) kindness, patience, and willingness to answer questions. The site tours at Elmina Castle, Cape Coast Castle, and Kakum Park were rich, informative, and thoughtfully paced, offering important historical and cultural context that deepened the experience of visiting Cape Coast. Tips for future travelers: The ride to Cape Coast is quite long (4-5 hours depending on traffic & road conditions). When we traveled, there was ongoing road construction along parts of the route which made the ride very bumpy at times. I highly recommend bringing a small pillow for comfort, snacks and water, medication if you’re prone to motion sickness, and—most importantly—patience. The journey is well worth it, but being prepared will make it much more enjoyable. Overall, this was an excellent tour led by a gracious and personable host. Highly recommended for anyone looking to explore the highlights of Cape Coast.
I am very glad I did this tour. Suwaiba, the guide, is a very kind person. The canopy walk in the Kakum National Park was a lot of fun, and the visits of the Cape Coast castles were very moving and educational.
Amazing tour through the Cape Coast, Elmina Castle and Kukum National Park. The drive to and from Cantonments took about 4-5 hours but it was well worth it. The slave castles are a must see, and the canopy walk was quite a hike up and the across the canopy walk 40 feet above ground. The view was breathtaking. We had a great tour guide. Gian was very helpful and friendly. I went with my mom and we had such a great day together.
We went with Suwaiba from ProTour Africa and Mr Ernest the driver - both friendly and informative. Really great experience - the day didn't feel rushed and they even kindly dropped us off to a restaurant we wanted to go to for dinner. I would recommend them to anyone - they were on time too!
Gian was the personification of calm under pressure. On our way to the National Park he luckily noticed a sound coming from the engine. Upon inspection he found a frayed fan belt. He tracked down a couple mechanics, located a new belt and we were able to finish the tour albeit a bit late. A long day for Gian!
This tour is a perfect mixture of nature and history. The visit to the Kakum National Park and its elevated walkways was very memorable. The visits to the slave forts presented the history of the slave trade, the sheer scale of the enterprise and also the inhuman conditions on which the slaves were held before transportation to the Americas. I noticed that in many of the prison areas and particularly at points of embarkation, many visitors from the US had left floral tributes to their ancestors. Suwaiba and Ernst were great guides
Great tour! Understandably a long day with the driving but a nice way to see more of Ghana if you only have a few days and you’re based in Accra. Really enjoyed the castle tours as well as lunch and the canopy walk at Kakum. One concern was that our group joined other groups at each of the castles for the tours, and due to how timing worked out we joined both late and missed the intros. Other than that, a great experience!
Seeing the horror that our ancestors had to endure. I hope this will never happen to any group of people again.
I was a bit nervous about prep and logistics leading up to my first tour in Ghana, but received a very detailed message from Rashida at ProTour Africa the afternoon prior. Our guide Gian was very knowledgeable, accommodating, and went above and beyond with additional recommendations for the remainder of our visit. Such an impactful day touring the 2 castles, followed by delicious and authentic lunch and fantastic hike at Kakum. A wonderful experience I would highly recommend!
I really enjoyed my tour. Gian drove me to all the locations and it was a smooth and easy ride there and back. Each stop I learned so much and my tours weren’t rushed.
This was a great experience and my tour guide Guid was really great!!! Thank you!!! I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone!!!
Our driver Nana and our tour guide Suema were fantastic, they get five stars. My only complaint is that on the site when booking the tour, it seems the reviews for several different tours were all together and I ended up not getting what I thought I signed up for. So just a word of caution to others, the tour to go to Slave River and the tour to see Kakum park are different. Make sure you sign up for the correct one. Also, the short hike to get to the canopy walk in Kakum park was more strenuous than we thought it would be!
This experience was definitely in our list during the visit. My husband and I rode with groups from other properties. We didn’t get started til maybe two hours after scheduled departure bc people were not ready. The journey was long but the castles were overwhelming to experience. The favorite parts for me were the bridge walk! It felt free to be up there and a good break from the heavy morning of cape coast. Food took a while to prepare and they ran out of a lot of items so we were scrambling to find something to eat. What took away from experience: 1. People not ready on time pushed the schedule back for everyone. This made late arrivals for everything that was scheduled. 2. Because they put so many people in one group, it took away from the experience and tours at the castles. 3. The road is not a smooth pathway driving there and back. The driver did not take those bumps into consideration and it made the ride uncomfortable. 4. Didn’t make it back till 11 pm and was scheduled for 6:30 am pick up. 5. Took us 2 hours for everyone to get their food, took up more time. But how often are you in Ghana to take advantage of these moments !? Just make sure you’re with a group who is looking for you to receive a good experience.
I really enjoyed my day trip with ProTour Africa. I thought the tour was well organised, for example we started at the Kakum National park which enabled us to miss the busy afternoon rush and saved the "heaviest" part of the tour- the Cape Coast Castle- for right at the end. Additionally, the driver and host were really friendly and had a comfortable drive even though the roads and traffic in Ghana can be quiet stressful. I highly recommend this tour operator. Thank you so much guys for a great trip!
Truly a day for the memory books! They picked us up right from our lodging and came exactly on time. The ride was relaxed and so scenic. Then the tours! Wowwwww just be ready for an emotionally impactful but also incredibly important physical introduction to one of the darkest periods of our world's history. They were thorough and and thoughtfully done. Then lunch was so great at the Kakuma Forest and the canopy walk was amazing! There was one more nearby site that I was dying to see and my driver was nice enough to let my group go snap a couple photos there before returning home. Truly a wonderful day!
Zainab and Nana Yaw were amazing. Zai was easy to talk with and she was very informal. If I ever rob a bank I'm getting Nana, that guy knows how to work the wheel. Great driving. We stopped for food and answered any questions I had. They were in constant communication with me from start to finish. The Kakoum park and the Cape coast castles were incredible, it's a must do when you go to Ghana. It's a long 3hr drive to get there but it was worth it. Keep up the great work.
There's nothing like getting rained on in the rainforest - what a blessing from the skies! Thank you to our tour guide Gian for such an incredible and deeply moving day. Its a spectacular experience walking the canopy walk in Kakum National Park, suspended between ancient indigenous trees. Both the Elmina and Cape Coast Castles were very powerful places to visit and be educated about the history of Ghana. I highly recommend this tour and the insights and take aways one gets when immersed in history and nature.
Very interesting visit of the Cape Coast and Elmina castles and beautiful landscapes at the Kakum National Parc.
Fantastic experience in Kakum National Park - walking through the rain forest canopy was truly magical. Friendly, knowledgeable guides at all sites and Gian was the perfect host
Kakum treetops we’re beautiful and my guides so friendly The cape coast is so worth a visit and full of history
We had a great time on this trip! It was better than we imagined! Our main guide was awesome and so were all the other guides! I highly recommend!
The tour was amazing and very informational about the city of Accra. Suwaiba was our tour guide and she was wonderful explaining monuments to us and helping us through the craft market. I would definitely take this tour again and recommend to others
We recently, scheduled a day tour which included the Canopy walk in the Cape Coast at Kakum National Park. When we arrived, we were quickly greeted by our tour guide who introduced himself and guided through the canopy walk. We first started off with a 15 minute hike with 3 rest stops inbetween before reaching the start of the canopy walk. On our way up our tour guide spoke to us about the area and how there were about 70 different tribes who lived off of the land of the rain forrest, the wildlife in the area and how the rain forrest is now protected. I would highly recommend this tour to those who enjoy a small hike and beautiful views of the rain forrest
This was a really great tour. Our guide Gian was very kind, helpful and knowledgeable. All the sites we visited on the Cape Coast tour were a good time and very informative. I'm glad I decided to do this because there's no way I could have figured out how to pack so much fun into one day on my own.
The visit and history regarding the Cape Coast and Elmina Castles. Especially Our driver/tour guide ( Gian) whom was outstanding, safe driving skills, knowledges of various towns / point of interest and professionalism.
Gian was excellent! He was very knowledgeable about the castles we visited and offered more information along the way. We were very pleased with the tour and our guide Gian.
This was such a special experience to have with my children and grandson. We started with the Slave River, headed to Elmina Castle and finished with the canopy walk at Kakum National park. The walk to slave river and the castle are sacred and such emotional experiences. Walking the canopies at Kakum is the perfect way to decompress and rebalance your emotions after experiencing such overwhelming emotions
This tour with Africa Protour through the History of slavery in Cape Coast was a profound experience. A huge thanks to our guide Rashida and our driver M. Ernest who hooked us up with the best guides at each site to fully understand the History. Looking forward to our next trip with Africa Protour through beautiful Ghana!
This organization did a great job of organizing our trip, we began early in the morning with a hotel pick up and went to the kakun national park and then went on guided tours of El mina castel and the cape coast castle. Our guide, Suweda, was very helpful and knowledgeable, i would definitely recommend this company for anyone visiting Ghana!
This tour was both an adventure and also an insight into the awful practices of the slave trade which took place in Africa (and across the world). Fun: Walking along the seven suspension bridges (canopy walkway) at Kankum National Park; Feeding and petting the crocodiles at Han's Cottage Botel and seeing the various species and birds. Historical: Visiting Emina Castle and Cape Coast Castle (also known as the dungeons) respectively. It was truly awful that these practices continued for 400 - 500 years. This is a MUST-DO tour for anyone visiting Ghana. The duration of this day tour took approximately 14 hours door to door. It was over a three hour drive to get to Cape Coast and also a good way to see the country en route. You will see that the country is very much underdeveloped and it needs major investment.
The tour was amazing. The day started at 7:00am (Ghanaian time) and it then, was a 3 hour bus ride that was comfortable to the first stop which is the Kakum National Park. The Kakum National Park is an amazing experience. There you will find the Canopy Bridge and get a tour of the different wildlife and species in the park. Next, we went to Elmina Castle which was 50 minutes away from the National Park. The tour of Elmina Castle was a emotional experience as you travel through the castle, you think about what the slaves had to ensure at the hands of injustice in the name of religion. Please note that every location had a separate tour guide that was familiar with the location and provided a tour. Lastly, we went to the Cape Coast Castle which the tour guide gave us chills every time she spoke. She created an almost immersive experience by closing the doors of the dungeons and turning off the lights. I left this location emotional for one as you feel the heaviness of your ancestors spirit. The tour guides for this tour gave us every thing we needed and more. They protected us from locals wanted us to buy their art to eating lunch as a group at one of the local restaurants. The food was good here! This definitely was an great experience and it is worth the price.
The trip was an amazing experience and I can't thank Pro Tour Africa enough for taking me to experience all Ghana has to offer. The company went ahead and arranged all tours for us and our lunch. The drive was quite long and tiring but Gian (our guide) made the entire trip entertaining and enjoyable. Communication was no issue from the moment they picked me up at my hotel to the time they dropped me off. I would definitely utilize their services again should I find myself in Ghana in the future.
This is an amazing experience. Really loved it . Very educative as well .the food was amazing too. The driver was great
I’m so pleased with my trip with AfricaProTours. My guide Gian was wonderful and I could not have asked for a smoother trip. I was a bit unsure of my schedule and so had to cancel once and rebook. No issues with canceling as long as it’s 24+ hrs ahead. The company contacts you when you’re within the 24 hour window to confirm departure time by WhatsApp. You can ask them questions then.
I was very delighted with the service provided by this company. It was just as expected. It was my first time traveling to Ghana and you provided a faultless experience. I will definitely recommend you to others, and will use you myself whenever I travel to Ghana. Many thanks.
Experience absolutely fantastic. I loved the historical part with the visit of the two castles, and the fun experience of the canopy. By the way, my guide Gian was really friendly and helpful!
The tour was very well organised and a most interesting experience. We were picked up on time from our hotel in Accra and taken on a 3 hours, 30 minutes drive to our first stop at the KakumNationalPark. The guide took us on a 20 minutes hike to get to the Canopy walkway. We went up to the bridges and the view from up there is beautiful; wonderful! Next we visited the Cape Coast castle and the St Georges castle (elmina castle). Our guide gave us a well informed and entertaining tour. The tour exceeded expectations and made us feel that we would like to spend more time exploring this region and it's wonderful beaches.
These castles are an absolute must see. Rashida was a great guide who is super knowledgeable about some of the lesser known (and, for me, more interesting) things about Ghana and the people who lived and worked there. Lunch at De Breeze was a really pleasant surprise as well. We drove back to Accra after the tour.
This tour was a splendid and an Emotional experience. The drive was from Accra to Cape coast. Both castles came with so much Emotional history. Everyone who can should take this tour and also share this beautiful experience.
Thanks for a great trip! It was very memorable and meaningful going to the castle. And the walking and the canopy walk was an experience!
I would highly recommend the cape coast tour to anyone looking to explore Ghana especially the cape coast castle. Learn about slave history, and have an adventure experience at kakum Park. It was definitely worth the time and money, and I can't wait to go on another tour with this company.
It was a full on day and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The Cape Coast and Elmina castles tour guides were highly knowledgeable and the walkway was definitely an experience. I love Ghana and it's people and this is my second trip. Already planning my next one! I recommend this trip and it lived up to its billing.
I really loved the Kakum Canopy and castles. There were so many aspects of the tour I loved and I am already planning my next trip back to Ghana with Rashida as my guide. Special mentions to our driver Mr Enerst our driver who did a marvelous job driving us to the sites. This trip will definitely not be forgotten by me anytime soon.
The drive was long but so very worthy. Had an emotional time on the Castle tours learning about the perils of the ancestors. Very touching experience. The Canopy walk was great experience. The lunch we had at the restaurant on property was delicious and well seasoned. Our tour guide was awesome (can’t recall his name) and explained to us a lot of info on the trees in the forest and their purposes. A long day but overall so worth it. Would have been nice to leave from the hotel earlier to return to the city not so late.
I really enjoyed my trip. It was a full day. The tours at both the Cape Coast and Elmina Castles were highly informative and very moving. The guide for the canopy walkway was excellent and the food not bad either !
We had beautiful day that filled with full of education and history from the African side of the slave trade. Gian our host was informative and funny and we enjoyed our day with him.. I highly recommend this tour to anyone that is looking to understand the circumstances our ancestors had to face. It was very overwhelming and such a heavy feeling. I highly recommend comfortable clothes and shoes, snacks and water as you are going all day. This was one of the best tours we have been on. Thx again Gian!!!
The history and culture was amazing. The tour guides were very knowledgeable and passionate. 10/10 from my partner and I.
Great experience that’s both educational and fun! You should eat before departing or bring a snack as lunch will be the final activity of the day.
My husband and I had enjoyed our tour to cape coast !! The ride to cape coast was long and bumpy but worth the trip !!
