Our tour of Elmina and the castle was everything I hoped it would be. Although a journey from Accra, our tour guide Yaw was punctual and helpful the entire time. He took time to answer our questions and explain how things work here in Ghana. We ate well and had meaningful discussions along the way. I would 100% recommend this tour for anyone looking to see the Elmina castle and other things included in the tour. Don’t hesitate. Just pull the trigger!

Booking the private Cape Coast/Elmina (En)slaved Dungeon and Canopy Walk tour with Citizen Tours was seamless, with regards to communications initiated in the U.S., and flawlessly escorted, as a tour experience in “The Motherland!!!” The day began promptly at 5am, my driver Moses picking me up at the location I was staying at, which was a great assist to me as opposed to the other tours I had inquired into requiring me to meet them at a predetermined location. Moses and I begun our travel to the Cape Coast, he very adeptly navigating the traffic, was indeed no small task. He and I spoke about what it will mean to me as an American African to experience Elmina (En)slaved Dungeon for the first, and very likely last time, and why it has been a lifelong necessity of mines… Along our route we picked up my tour guide, Citizen Tour owner, and fellow “Yaw,” and he and I bonded instantly! I learned how he as a facilitator for those of us, particularly of the diaspora, do require a certain level of support and understanding, when embarking on this type of experience into the past…?! Prior to Elmina we traveled to the Kakum Rainforest to do the Canopy Walk which was both exciting and picturesque! I joked with Yaw saying it was obvious why he chooses to start this tour here; coupled with the impending heaviness of Elmina (En)slaved Dungeon, the Canopy Walk provides an equal amount of challenge, accomplishment, and levity! I had fun doing this walk…!!! We three (Yaw, Moses, and I) had lunch at an extraordinary resort restaurant called the “Lemon Beach Resort:” here, it is picturesque, so utterly balmy, and the food was so very delicious!!! Not an aside but truly noteworthy, having eaten fish in Elmina, Accra, and Kumasi, Ghana is a pescatarian, foodie’s paradise! Elmina (En)slaved Dungeon — No imagination gets you even remotely close to the horrors and inhumanity felt in this space!!! NO HUMAN BEING IS INNATELY A SLAVE — Human beings, horrifically and tragically, when subjugated by the immoral and rotten, are ENSLAVED!!! What is a castle for one is a dungeon for another… there is so much more not to be said in this review about my “experience” at this dungeon but what has to be both acknowledged and in my case, deeply appreciated, is how Yaw stood shoulder to shoulder with me and served as my Sacred witness as I had my “Sankofa” moment… that I should learn from the past to build a strong future by any means necessary… Be guided safely, knowledgeably, and compassionately with Citizen Tours; Medase, Yaw and Moses!!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Absolutely Incredible Experience with Citizen Tour** I had the absolute pleasure of touring with **Citizen Tour** in Accra, Ghana, and I cannot recommend them enough. Our guide **Joshua (also known as Yaw)** was phenomenal — knowledgeable, warm, and passionate about sharing the history and beauty of Ghana. Our driver, **Moses**, was equally amazing, ensuring we traveled safely and comfortably the entire day. We journeyed from Accra to **Cape Coast**, starting with **Kakum National Park** for the thrilling **canopy rope bridge walk**. Initially, I was unsettled by the swinging of the bridge, but both Joshua and my uncle were incredibly supportive and patient, helping me make it through **all seven bridges** with confidence. The views from above the rainforest were breathtaking — a memory I’ll never forget. Afterward, we enjoyed a delicious lunch at **Lemon Beach Resort**, the perfect spot to relax and recharge. The most powerful part of the tour was visiting **Elmina Castle**. Walking through its corridors and hearing the stories about how the castle played a role in the **transatlantic slave trade** was heavy and emotional. As a Black woman in the diaspora, standing in a place where my ancestors were held captive against their will — and endured unimaginable atrocities — was deeply moving and humbling. This experience was **rich in history, culture, and emotion**, and Citizen Tour made it all seamless and impactful. If you are visiting Ghana and want a tour company that treats you like family while providing an unforgettable, respectful, and well-organized experience, **look no further than Citizen Tour**.
Yaw was excellent. Spent a wonderful day with him, along with my friends. Great transportation. He was informative and flexible with our schedule. I highly recommend him.
This is a review for the Citizens Tour guides. We had a wonderful time. The tour guides were very, very courteous and professional. I would certainly go back with them anytime. All the tours were very well planned. I didn't have any problem. I felt very comfortable at all times. I do plan to use them again if ever I am back in country.
I can’t imagine doing this tour with a more awesome team. From the welcome message from Joseph all the way to a safe drop off and warm farewell. We visited Elmira castle which was eye opening, emotional and educational Kukum canopy walkway was an experience. Great views a bit of a hike so be sure to be comfortable. Moses was our driver and host. He was simply amazing. He made sure we were comfortable, answered all our questions giving great insight into Ghana as this was our first trip. Helped us navigate every aspect of the tour, introduced us to the cocoa fruit. He a wealth of knowledge and fun. I had the greatest birthday surprise following an authentic Ghanaian meal which we loved. I would choose this team again and again. Medasi Joseph and Moses.
It was a beautiful experience. My guides were fabulous. The experience was eye-opening, sad and beautiful all at the same time.
Yaw and Kwame were amazing guides, and even greater company! This was one of the best experiences - from a timely pick up in the morning, to a smooth drive, and an exhilirating experience at the Kakum National Park Canopy Walk. The trip was planned with every detail taken care of to make it as comfortable and memorable for anyone going. Would highly recommend this to anyone!
Visiting Cape Coast/Elmina Slave Dungeon is a must see, more than a tour, an experience, when you visit Accra, Ghana. Citizen Tours, Kwame & Yaw were our private and exceptional guides. Even the drive to Elmina, was filled with historical facts and information about local sights. The Canopy Walkway Tour was beautiful and breathtaking, also a once in a life time experience. Yaw and Kwame of Citizen Tours, throughout the day were our hosts and we always felt safe and attended to. We highly recommend them for your trip too!
This was our second trip back in 6 years, and we’re not done yet! Citizen Tours company is by far the most efficient and accommodating tour company in Ghana. We enjoyed all the special attractions and attention to details even to those small things we missed. We are looking to return, prayerfully, next year and booking with Citizens Tours Company most definitely! We’re coming BACK home!
I had a great day trip from Accra to Kakum National Park and Elmina Castle. Yaw from Citizen Tours was a great guide and safe driver on the road. The tour is recommended for those who want to combine the beauty of the country with the shocking history of slavery. Elmina Castle tells this history through its impressive dungeons and rooms. Many men and women were forcefully taken from Ghana to the New World. They are the ancestors of many who now live in the Americas and Europe. Elmina Castle is not be missed by their descendants and all others who want to know more of the history of the Dutch in Ghana.
So much fun was had. Citizen Yaw and Kwame put together an amazingly joyful trip for us. When someone thoroughly enjoys what they do, their enthusiasm leaks onto all those around them. If you considering booking with these guys... JUST DO IT. I do think our whole trip can be summed up with just one word...KELEWELE!!!😂😂😂
Really great experience with new ans old friends. All the activities were beginner- intermediate friendly and for young and older people. Really enjoyed the Elmina Castle tour and to accommodation. Yaw and Kwame were both great hosts and went the extra mile to make us feel comfortable and well looked after. Even with the challenge of slow food service and poor customer service from a local restaurant, the guys kept their cool and handled everything so positively.
We just came back from a pre-wedding weekend getaway and Citizen Yaw and team handled a group of 35 adults and children like they were not herding cats (and they were 😂). We were assembled on a luxury coach with AC with scheduled early morning pick ups, operating on European time (punctual). We departed Accra’s west side at about 7:45am and arrived at Kukum National Park around 12:45pm. We had a couple of bathroom breaks en route from Accra to Cape Coast which was great for the kids so that slowed us down a bit. We did the treetop walk at Kukum national park and it was great for all ages even my 4 year old did it and had a great time. We headed to our resort for a buffet lunch, arriving about 4pm. Traditional dancers entertained us that evening. We also scheduled a night out which we unanimously opted out of due to the long day which shows more our age than the wonderful tour team 🤣. They were even able to assist with organising surprise birthday cakes for a couple of friends. The next day was a relaxing start. We could swim and visit the beach in the morning then headed for the Elmina tour and boat ride after lunch. We left Elmina just before 10:45 am and arrived in Accra around 2:45pm with one stop so it was quicker to get back. Upon return to Accra we fit in a visit to the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and a drive around Independence Square. The team were so patient and friendly and there was no stress at all. Whatever we needed was taken care of, even tummy meds. What more could we ask? Great job guys we appreciate you.

The best tour guides , Kwame & Yaw and our driver we’re above and beyond . I had the pleasure of taking this tour for my bday and they made it special with surprises!! They were personally some of the best humans we encountered answered our million questions about culture and history The was the highlight of our travels to Accra Lemon beach lunch was phenomenal The tour in the castle is emotional brace yourselves. Pro Tips : Pack some snacks that ride to cape coast is definitely long and a bit bumpy but we’ll worth it .
This was my first time in Ghana and couldn’t have asked for a better Cape Coast/Elmina experience. The tour was so informational and our guide Yaw, and driver, Frank, were so attentive and made us comfortable throughout the journey. Yaw is an Elmina native and provided unique insights into the culture. From the adventures of Kakum to the walls of the Elmina slave dungeons, this is truly a humbling and special experience everyone should partake. Thank you Yaw and Frank!
Discovering Ghana with Yaw has been a really great experience! We travelled from Accra to Kumasi.. down to the coast and in the Volta Region. The whole trip was full of adventures, local experiences, tasty food and filled with fun and energy! Yaw took very good care of us. He has a lot of knowledge on the country and always had an answer to our questions. Frank was the best driver and it was great to have him as part of the team. My recommendations: go to the markets! They are fantastic. The harbor in Elmina is a magical place. The Volta Region is beautiful and standing underneath the waterfall was a crazy experience which I wouldn't want to miss. For me the experience in Ghana is not just about the adventures and beautiful landscapes. It's about the amazing and welcoming people I met all over the trip. We had a lot of fun travelling with both and I can totally recommend to book a trip with them and enjoy Ghana ❤️💛💚
Kwame was our Event Planner for our wedding and also my sons chaperone during our honeymoon and stay in Cape Coast. He provided constant feedback and assisted me while oversees to create a memorable day both my husband I will never forget. During our time there he made sure my sons gained knowledge of the country, participated in cultural activities and created life long memories. Lastly he provided transportation from and to Accra. He was always professional, polite, and helpful with any issues or concerns. I recommend him and his service to anyone that desires to see and experience Ghana. We will definitely will call on him again and recommend him for any future trips to Ghana.
The history of Elmina was by far the must interesting and educational. My tour guide was prompt and offered much assistance. The local food was also great to experience and I will definitely return in the future.
A truly exciting and memorable experience.Kwame was a knowledgeable guide and friend who made the the trip worthwhile. Being from Elmina, he had a lot to share. The canopy walk at Kakum National Park is one of its kind a must do if you want to feel the dense rainforest and enjoy its vast beauty. Kakum and Elmina are steeped in history and alongside the natural beauty of the place, Kwame's company made it even more interesting. I definitely recommend Citizen tours if you really want to enjoy Ghana. I for one will definitely go with them for all future tours.
I went on the Cape Coast/Elmina Tour, with Kwame the tour guide. He an very knowledgeable, kind spirit, down to earth guy someone who treated me like family, he’s an native who is from Elmina who can answer any questions you need to know about the Ghana culture. He customized a very good private tour that fit my interest, Since I’m a historian who loves history. We visited Assin Manso Slave River, St. George Castle in Elmina, & Kakum National Rain Forrest with Canopy walkway. He also help me with connections in Ghana to visited different regions in Ghana. I highly recommend Citizen Tours. They don’t just treat you as an customer, they treat you like family. I can’t wait to visit 🇬🇭 again!
When we arrived in Ghana we wanted to know more about the history of Ghana and about the role of the Netherlands during colonialization. A friend recommended Kwame to me. He showed us all of Elmina and we passed all places where Dutch people had played a role. He knew a lot about history and knew many locals.
Professional, fun, informative, and worth every dollar. Citizen Tours provides each person with a holistic portrait of Ghana, unafraid to explore the most beautiful aspects of nature, scenery, local foods and culture while respecting history. My friends and I even became friends with Yaw and Kwame -- they speak English very well and are happy to include you as their own. If we ever come back to Ghana, we will book with Citizen Tours! We loved every moment! We certainly miss it!
Yaw and the team at Citizen Tours are incredible, giving a real, cultural tour of true Ghana. We all felt comfortable and enjoyed every part of our 10 day visit to Ghana. It was truly incredible all thanks to these wonderful people. I would fully recommend Citizen Tours for any type of visit!
This was the trip of all trips! We felt a connection to the homeland upon arrival. Yaw and Mr. Abraham were very accommodating and gave us an awesome experience of Ghana. The visit to Elimina moved my heart and it was a privilege to take my sons to visit how our ancestors left their home and family forever. Later my husband went on his own visit with Yaw and he too felt the instant connection. We are definitely spreading the word on the tour company and the necessity of visiting "home". We will definitely return and have the intentions of returning for "good". Yaw, thanks for all your knowledge and kindly during our visit to your wonderful and beautiful country. Forever our brother... The Davis family.
It started really early. At 5:15 I was picked up at my accommodation in Accra to be driven west. On board was Jeff, the driver, and Joseph, who accompanied me all day and showed me the sights of the Cape Coast. After a long and safe drive we arrived at Kakum National Park. It was a trekking route that had a huge suspension bridge at the end. Several hundred meters had to be overcome. Not for people with a fear of heights. Then we went to the coast, where the Elmina Castle survived for centuries. The history of slavery is still palpable. The day ended with a local meal and beer. Thanks for the great care.
