The Cape Coast Castle is one of the biggest castles still standing in Ghana today which was constructed by European forces, On a portion of the Gold Coast that subsequently came to be known as the Cape Coast, it all started as a Portuguese trade lodge built in 1555. The Swedish Africa Company built a permanent wooden stronghold in 1653 to facilitate the trading of gold and lumber after Sweden conquered the Cape Coast. The regional office of the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board is located there, and it is currently a historical museum with a gift shop selling Ghanaian arts and crafts.
So Jorge da Mina (St. George of the Mine) was the name given to Elmina Castle by the Portuguese in 1482 when they erected it in Elmina, Ghana (formerly the Gold Coast). Elmina and Elmina Castle is the oldest European structure still standing below the Sahara because it was the first trading post ever constructed on the Gulf of Guinea. It was initially founded as a trading colony but eventually developed into one of the most significant sites along the path of the Atlantic slave trade. A significant portion of Werner Herzog's 1987 drama film "Cobra Verde" was filmed at Elmina Castle, which is now a well-known historical landmark. It serves as a stark reminder of the history of the slave trade and is a very sought-after destination for African American travelers hoping to connect with their heritage.
Ghana’s most visited attraction site, tucked away with the Kakum Rainforest is the amazing canopy walkway suspended 40m above ground level, which offers a fascinating and beautiful perspective of the forest and Wildlife.

I believe everyone should do this tour especially black people to learn about our history, culture and how our ancestors died for us. This was quite emotional for me and I cried when I was listening and seeing the places where they lay before being shipped off. I visited both Cape Coast and Elmina Castle plus we also went to Kakum National Park where I went on all 7 canopies. Such a great experience. Big up my tour guide Portia and driver Sen love them both .
Let me start by saying Issac and Emmanuel made the journey wayyyy better than it could have been. The roads are ruff, the ride takes awhile but the experience is a MUST for anyone who yarns to feel what we’ve been through and overcaim. The days starts early so you may or may not get a chance to eat breakfast the day of so pack something light to snack on, oh and make sure you have hand sanitizer, thank me later.
Visiting the slave dungeons at the castles was extremely emotional. The tour guide was very knowledgeable. The Kakum Park and Canopy walk was exhilarating.
Patrick and his Driver were amazing. They got us to our destinations as quickly and safely as possible. They were very professional. Kakum National was surely a highlight for me with the canopy walk. I would surely recommend the tour to anyone coming to ghana.
Our tour guide was Patrick. Pickup time was communicated efficiently the day before and the tour guide kept to time. Cape Coast is a pretty long drive from Accra, but Patrick engaged us actively all the the way. It was a great experience overall. Highly recommended!
We were picked up in a mini van which was air conditioned and comfortable. The tour was as advertised, visiting Kukum National Park, Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle. Our guide was good and adapted to the needs of the group. The sights were all very interesting and well worth the visit. The only thing to know is that it is a very long day (14 hours) with a lot of driving, some of it on fairly bumpy roads.
Seeing the castles was very good. The tour guides at each castle were excellent. Due to knee problems with all the walking I did not do the hike at the national park. The drive to and from my hotel was very uncomfortable. The roads were awful in a lot of places along the way. It turned out to be 15 hour day for me. If I had known that before I would not have booked the tour.
This was a well thought out tour and our driver and our tour guide Emmanuel was incredibly kind and attentive. They spoke deeply about the history of the country and our surroundings and kept us entertained for the long ride. The vehicle was air conditioned, waters were provided, and the clean and comfortable. They picked us up on time and drop us off in a timely manner as well! I highly recommend this tour to cape coast and elmina. The history is rich and there is so much to learn. Kakum national park was amazing as well and fun addition!
This tour was educational, emotional, and fun. We got a little of everything. The tour guide was very professional, and knowledgeable. We had a fabulous time.
Overall a good experience. Emmanuel was our guide and he did a great job explain things along the drive to Cape Coast and along the way. They picked each person/group up at the hotels. If you’re the first pickup you may ride 30-45 mins through the stops to pick up the others. We ended up with 6 tourists, the driver, and guide. The transportation was late model Toyota van that had seating for about 10 (but that would be very uncomfortable). We were fairly comfortable with our group of 6. Cape Coast is only about 75 miles from Accra but the heavy traffic and road conditions make the drive about 3-3.5 hours. On the way down we stopped for an about 20 minutes for a bathroom break. I would say about 70-80% of the road is paved but there are a few spots that are not paved and the road gets bumpy. Nothing excessive but it makes the driver go slower. Once you get out of the city there are no painted lanes and the drivers just go where they need to to get around. If you’ve never experienced it, it can be sporty! Our driver did a great job navigating the roads and is clearly experienced. Of note, I thought there wasn’t much population once we left Accra but there are several small villages along the way. There is interesting scenery along the entire route seeing the towns and people along the route. We were at cape coast about an hour or so, then a drive to Elmina, and to Kakum. All tours were as described. Lunch at Kakum was fine but bring cash because they do not take credit cards. The walk up the hill to the rope bridge wasn’t bad but will depend on your health and fitness. If you’re in average health and can walk up stairs without issue then you’ll be fine. Without stops you can probably walk to the top in 5-7 minutes. However, we’d walk about 2 mins and then stop for a couple mins for those who needed extra time. Not really necessary but I’d recommend bug spray. The drive back is actually longer because each stop is further away. I recommend taking a bathroom break on the way back. We did not (it was offered by Emmanuel) but once we reached Accra the traffic was still very heavy in the evening and it took a while to go a short distance. It’s a long day but the tours are worth it. Just be prepared for the ride. As other reviewers have stated bring some snacks, water, headphones if you like for entertainment on the ride. Great job by the Expedition Tour Company.
It's hard to say I had a great time because the subject matter but it was a good day. The trek in the middle helped with some levity. Both castle tour guides were knowledgeable welcoming and treated the subject matter with reverence. The company guide was also super knowledgeable and a lot of fun to be around
The whole experience was beautiful. Our Driver Emmanuel is very friendly, courteous, patient, and an excellent driver. The tour of both castleswas wonderful and we had a great time, climbing the mountain in the rainforest. I definitely recommend this experience to everyone..
It was a great tour with a safe ride. Our driver Daniel was very willing to answer our questions and get us set up with a guide for each stop (Elmina castle, cape coast castle and Kakum national park). He picked up the other guests in Accra (I was staying local to Elmina) so I know they had a long day making it back too but they were in safe hands with a clean car. We did not have supervision in Kakum and had a little difficulty finding the right trails to climb to the canopy walk but were able to put our heads together (the four guests) to figure it out and it was very bonding. While Daniel drive and coordinated, I think we expected a little more interaction. But the tour guides at each location were hospitable and kind and shared with us the history of the location and overall significant. The only thing lacking was a conversation with an ecologist or jungle expert about all the things we were seeing.
If you are visiting Ghana and considering a Cape Coast day tour, book it with Expedition-Go Tours. This was easily one of the most memorable experiences of my time in Ghana. The day managed to be adventurous, educational, beautiful, sobering, and emotionally transformative — sometimes within the span of only a few hours. Our tour guide, Emmanuel, was wonderful from beginning to end. He was punctual, incredibly knowledgeable, personable, and made the entire day feel seamless. His knowledge and guidance added tremendously to the experience without ever making the day feel rushed or overly structured. Starting at Kakum National Park and walking across the canopy bridges high above the rainforest was exhilarating. The views were absolutely beautiful, and it was such a unique way to experience Ghana’s natural landscape. Seeing Cape Coast and the surrounding community afterward added another dimension to the day and gave us an opportunity to experience more of the area beyond the major attractions. Then came the Elmina and Cape Coast Castles, and the tone of the day understandably changed. I’ve learned about the transatlantic slave trade throughout my life, but there is an enormous difference between reading that history and physically standing where it happened. Walking through the castle, entering the spaces where enslaved Africans were confined, hearing their stories, and understanding what occurred within those walls was incredibly powerful. There were moments when I simply had to stand still and process what I was experiencing. As a visitor, I think it’s important to understand that this portion of the tour can carry a significant emotional weight. It is heartbreaking and uncomfortable — and it should be. At the same time, I found the experience deeply meaningful, personal, and transformative. I left with an even greater appreciation for the importance of preserving these places and telling the stories of the people who passed through them. The word “Akwaaba” — welcome — took on an entirely different significance for me by the end of the experience. I cannot recommend this tour highly enough. Come ready for the adventure and beauty of Kakum, come ready to learn, and come with an open heart for the Elmina and Cape Coast Castles. Be prepared for the emotional impact because this is not simply a day of sightseeing. It is an opportunity to experience history in a way that stays with you. A huge thank you to Emmanuel and Expedition-Go Tours for making an already significant experience even more memorable. 10/10. Absolutely worth doing. 🇬🇭❤️
The experience was spirit stirring and history shaking. It was impactful in every way. My concern is outside of the tour control: the road construction projects made life more difficult. But the experience was out of this world. These are the sentiments of our group of 15. Blessings Enough.
We thoroughly enjoyed this long but fruitful excursion. Our guide, Emmanuel, was professional, courteous, and very informative, answering all of the many questions we had along the way. I highly recommend this experience.
A great experience, the tour guide and driver were perfect. A long trip, but felt safe the entire time.
I had an amazing experience on this tour from start to finish! Our tour guide, Wisdom, was absolutely wonderful. He was professional, knowledgeable, patient, and extremely attentive throughout the entire day. What stood out to me most was how genuinely helpful he was. At Kakum National Park, he made sure I was comfortable and assisted me when I needed help, which I truly appreciated. He consistently checked on us throughout the tour and made sure we were enjoying the experience. We visited Cape Coast, Elmina, and Kakum National Park, so it was a very full and long day, but Wisdom remained attentive and accommodating the entire time. He also went above and beyond to help me with currency exchange when I needed additional cedis, which was not something he had to do but was greatly appreciated. Wisdom helped make an already memorable experience in Ghana even better. If you’re considering this tour, I highly recommend it—and if you have the opportunity to have Wisdom as your guide, you’ll be in great hands! 100/10 experience!
Emmanuel was a wonderful guide! He deftly navigated us from Accra to cape coast and back, and gave very good commentary as well about the various landmarks along the way!
A really informative and interesting day. The guides are very knowledgeable and the whole experience will stay with me. Some parts hit hard regarding the history of this area.
When you come to Accra, you must experience the Cape Coast and Kakum National Park with Expedition Tours! I had an amazing time with Emmanuel and Christopher. They were wonderful, and I would absolutely do it again to learn even more about the rich history and beautiful culture Ghana has to offer. Expedition Tours was incredibly accommodating and responded to my inquiries right away. Thank you, Expedition Tours, for an unforgettable experience! I highly recommend you to anyone visiting Ghana.
A fantastic day from beginning to end!! Communication before the trip was great. Pick up was on time, the plan for the day was explained and fantastic guides for each location! I would highly recommend!!
I think this tour was one of the best ever, first off I had an amazing tour guide Patrick, he was so informative and amazing throughout the whole tour. Cape coast and Elmina castle was an incredible experience and Kakum national park was icing on the cake 👌🏾
Whole experience was amazing. Was able to book last minute the day before. It is worth every penny and more affordable than me booking a private car plus admission fees, to take me to Cape Coast. Received pick up location the night before. The driver was friendly. The journey was around 4 hours from Accra but the car was very comfortable with aircon. Cape Coast castle was quite emotional for me. Wish I had more time as the tour was only 45mins but Elina Castle tour was slightly longer with more time to explore the castle and pay my respects to my ancestors. The tour guides were very knowledgeable. Pre-ordered lunch before arriving at Kakum National Park which was ready when we arrived. Lots of walking and step steps but that made the experience more enjoyable. The canopy walk was breathtaking, though I didn't look down.
Patrick was prompt, professional, organized and knowledgeable. He provided an itinerary which helped us understand how the day would transpire. I would highly recommend him.
Wow, what an impactful experience. I booked this because I wanted to go on the canopy tour, but the Cape Coast Castle will stay with me forever - reading and watching videos does not compare to being in the dungeons and walking the grounds. Additionally, I met a new friend and learned all about Singapore during the long drive, which our guide was very efficient and safe with.
It was the whole day and went quick.
We had a wonderful experience and felt well-cared for. It was a long day but we felt we fulfilled what we hoped for to see the Castles and the hanging bridges. Our guide was excellent.
Great tour experience! The journey was long due to traffic and bumpy road conditions, however our driver was very professional and got us to the location fast. The tours itself were very eye-opening. The only downside was that our lunch was at 4pm, but that was because of traffic, so I don’t blame that on the tour company.
We had an excellent time doing this tour. We found visiting the castles impactful and moving. It is an experience that we won’t forget. Doing the canopy walk was a great time. It’s beautiful to be so immersed in nature. I could’ve have done 10 more bridges! It’s a long drive both ways so I suggest to pack a snack.
This tour was captivating and educational to those that are unaware of what our ancestors had to endure. The ride to the location there and back took a few hours but we were prepared for that ahead of time due to reading others comments. Patrick our tour guide was fantastic as well. He answered any and all questions we had. I would definitely recommend this tour to any who comes to Accra.
We had an amazing day out with Emmanuel as our guide who couldn't have been better. The castles and the tree top walk were great, very interesting with lots of history to take in. Emmanuel did a brilliant job of getting us there despite the many issues he had with the roads and traffic etc. He is hands down, the best driver we've ever met, very calm and also told us lots about life in Ghana and the places we were driving through. Lunch was good, reasonably priced and the journey was very comfortable. Highly recommend!
Everything was high quality, especially the expertise of the guide Emmanuella. Logistics, communication, and the historical knowledge and customer service from Emmanuella was first class. If you’re thinking about it, book this memorable experience now!
The Cape Coast trip was a great experience. Patrick was a tremendous tour guide and custodian. He kept us on track and safe, as well as provided great information along the way. He even went the extra mile to find my friend’s phone after he dropped it on the canopy walkway. I would definitely recommend Expedition Go tours team here in Accra! Also, Patrick took pictures along the way and was kind enough to share them with us. Thank you for making my first trip to Africa and Ghana an experience of a lifetime.
Emmanuel was an amazing tour guide. It’s so convenient to have this in one tour with transportation included. A lot of history and fun all in 1 day!
Good experience. Our tour guide Emmanuel was very patient and knowledgeable.
Patrick was a first-rate guide for this life-changing experience in every respect. First, he is a top-notch driver, navigating any number of challenges flawlessly during a day long trip, including several hours of driving. During the trip, he imparted wisdom about the areas we we’re traveling through, and also was masterful at stimulating conversation amongst the 5 of us who traveled with him, most of whom were strangers. The tours of the castles were appropriately solemn, with the guides at both sites providing moving narratives, constantly striking the right tone. The trip to Kekum Park was a perfect ending to this trip, and the lunch we enjoyed there was delicious!
I had a very nice experience with my daughter. Everything went smoothly at each stop, and the guide was very friendly, informative, and helpful.
Wisdom was my tour guide. He was very knowledgeable and personable. Felt like I was on a tour with a good friend! The castle experience is a must for all African diaspora. The park at the end is beautiful and a great way to release heavy emotions from the castles. Overall, the day was memorable and I thank Wisdom for setting the tone for a great day.
This was a fantastic trip and Daniel was a great driver. This was our second attempt at going on this trip, we unfortunately got caught up in the floods on 29th June, so our trip was cancelled. Expedition-go tour rearranged without difficulty. There communication was great Our driver Daniel was friendly and warm and helped us with getting some local street food We enjoyed all 3 sites we visited. Bewear the drive is very long and the roads dreadful but that's part of the experience! Daniel did well to navigate the potholes and traffic😁
I had a gret experience with the institution on my tour. Your service worth hiring alway. TheWonderfu tour guards are on task.
At the Cape Coast Castle, Rose was so warm and friendly and very knowledgeable. Her stories were very powerful and detailed. At the Elmina Castle, Nathaniel stories made us feel like we were actually there. His stories were so vivid. We were able to take the hike at the National Park, but was unable to cross the bridge due to the heavy rain, but overall the park was spectacular. All praises to our driver Emmanuel with Expedition Go-Tour Ltd. Very professional, pleasant, and impeccable driving skills. I enjoyed our conversations.
I had such a great experience on this tour, Wisdom and Emmanuel were such great guides and were knowledgeable about the history of Ghana. Enjoyed the history lessons on the way. Loved the canopy walk at Kakum and learning about the sobering history on the Cape Coast castle and Elmina
Great day trip. Very impactful stop offs at Cape Coast and Elmina Castles. The canopy walk at Kakum was also fantastic. The lunch option was also great. Would definitely recommend to anybody returning to Ghana with family or ancestral roots and visitors from across the world to see a true, and at times shocking, history of what has impacted us all. The tour guide at both castles were very knowledgable. The transportation was also very comfortable, with WiFi included. There is ample opportunity to stop along the route at restrooms, ATMs and snack stops. One thing to be aware of is the current major reconstruction project on the N1 freeway, which is a sizeable part of the journey. It causes a bumpy ride on the way to Cape Coast and traffic delays on return to Accra. It’s no fault of the tour operator (who are great), just poor planning on the part of the freeway contractor!
I had a wonderful experience on this tour! My pickup from my hotel went smoothly and the Expedition-Go Tours made sure to check-in during my trip to make sure all was well. My tour guide, Patrick, was very friendly and knowledgeable, answering all of my questions about the sites and in general regarding Ghana, the culture, and the people. The Cape Castle and Elmina Castle tours were very informative and emotionally moving, and the Kakum National Park excursion was fun. I will say that crossing the bridge in the park was a little bit scary though but safe. Instead of returning to Accra the same day, I decided to spend the night and return to Accra the next day since it is a long drive each way. I would recommend this tour as an efficient and cost-effective way for anyone who wants see these key sights in Cape Coast to do so with a quality tour guide.
The trip to Cape Coast to see all the three locations: Cape Coast Castle, Elmina castle and Kakum National park was amazing. It was one experience that I had longed to have together with my wife since we started planning our trip to Ghana from Finland. The tour driver' experience in providing some very interesting history bits during the course of journey was well appreciated. All the three journey locations were nothing short of a rich history experience for my wife and I. The tour driver did his best to navigate as quickly and as safe as possible to and fro locations but of course, roads under construction and traffic add a considerable amount of time to our journey which is out of the hands of the tour. Though we arrived home the same day, we did arrive later than expected so it is good to know that external factors can easily add another 1hr or more to the journey but our wonderful tour driver (and also guide during travel time), Mr. Patrick, navigated the roads and chose routes that were comfortable and best for the experience. All in all, I will say the tour company care about the whole experience and do everything in the ability to keep you informed before and after the journey through WhatsApp and calls. 5/5 for everything and thank you :)
Our guide Emanuel was very helpful, communicative, and kind throughout the entire trip. He really went above and beyond to make sure we had the best and safest experience possible. He was very knowledgeable and answered everyone's questions throughout the journey. Our driver, Mr. Set, was also incredible. He got us through wet and bad roads very safely and played great music the whole way through.
The trip to the Castles and Kakum Park was very good. Everyone enjoyed themselves even though Cape Coast Castle was our second visit. Emanuel and the driver Mr Steep were very courteous and nice and helpful to us. It was a trip to remember!!! The canopy bridges were everything.
We booked both the Accra City Tour and the Cape Coast Day Tour, which included Elmina Castle, Cape Coast Castle and Kakum National Park, and had an amazing experience throughout. Wisdom and the entire team were friendly, professional, knowledgeable and incredibly helpful from start to finish. Everything was very well organised, making it easy for us to relax and enjoy the experience. The tours were informative, moving and enjoyable in equal measure. Visiting the castles was a powerful experience, while walking across the Kakum canopy walkway was great fun and a real highlight of the trip. We learned so much about Ghana’s history and culture and always felt well looked after. We would highly recommend Expedition Go Tours to anyone visiting Ghana and looking for a reliable, professional and enjoyable tour experience. 5 stars – highly recommended! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
